AOPA continues to support pilots flying for both business and pleasure, while working with the CAA to protect the rights and privileges of licence holders. ✈️

We believe the current licensing system can be simplified without reducing pilot freedoms. That includes greater harmonisation between licence types, mutual recognition between UK and EASA licences, and ensuring pilots are never forced to convert existing licences unless they choose to do so.

General Aviation is about more than recreation. AOPA will continue to champion a licensing system that reflects the diversity of pilots and operations across the UK.

⏰ Reminder for SLMG and Microlight pilots using the 5 in 13 revalidation exemption (ORS4 1633).

If you're currently revalidating your rating under the exemption, you'll need to transition to the new 24-month validity system by 31 October 2026.

Don't leave it until the last minute, check the requirements now and make sure your licence remains valid and up to date.

The CAA has published a new information hub on the updated ICAO Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS) framework, with global implementation set for 21 November 2030. ✈️

The new performance-based approach will affect aerodromes, planners, developers and safeguarding authorities across the UK. Aerodromes will need to review safeguarding maps, obstacle databases, planning processes and airspace models as part of the transition.

The CAA is also running a series of workshops throughout 2026 to help stakeholders prepare for the changes.

AOPA notes that the new OLS framework could impact not only licensed aerodromes, but also some unlicensed aerodromes and private strips with safeguarding arrangements in place.

AOPA supports the use of Electronic Conspicuity (EC) where it helps maintain safe access to non-segregated airspace. ✈️

For EC to truly benefit General Aviation, systems must deliver real safety improvements, work across platforms, be internationally accepted, and remain practical for all airspace users.

A connected future for aviation needs solutions that are effective, interoperable and accessible.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport has successfully completed stages one and two of its Airspace Change Process (ACP) , an important milestone on the path towards reopening. ✈️

The airport will now move into stage three, including a wider public consultation on future airspace plans this summer. Discussions with airlines and freight operators are also continuing as momentum builds towards a potential reopening decision in Spring 2027.

The project has already incorporated stakeholder feedback to help reduce the amount of controlled airspace required.

The airport is also partnering with Aerobility later this month to help make aviation more accessible through introductory flights for disabled people.
