Understanding Hotel Room Rates & Single Supplements
We often get questions about room costs, twin shares, and why solo rooms cost more. To help clear up how hotel and package pricing works for group trips, here is a simple breakdown:
Hotels charge by the room, not per person. A double room (one bed) and a twin room (two separate beds) almost always cost the exact same total price per night.
Sharing splits the bill. When two people share a twin room, that total room cost is divided evenly between them, making it much cheaper per person.
What a "single supplement" really is. If one person stays in a standard double or twin room alone, the hotel still requires the full rate for that room. A single supplement isn't an extra penalty fee—it simply covers the half of the room cost that would normally be paid by a second person.
Why package prices assume sharing. Holiday and tour companies calculate their advertised prices on the basis of two people sharing a room. When you travel solo, the room cost isn't split, which is why solo packages show a higher total price per person.
Dedicated single rooms. Some hotels offer smaller, dedicated single rooms (with a single bed). While these are cheaper than paying for a full double room by yourself, the price is still higher than half the cost of sharing a twin room.
