Forget the usual safari lodges for a minute… because some of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences are hiding in places you might never have thought to look and some have seriously special places to stay alongside them.

You could be navigating the energy of its cities one day, travelling between mountains and rice fields the next, before finishing somewhere beside the sea with absolutely nowhere else to be.

But with so many possible routes, knowing how to piece everything together can be the difficult part. Family holidays change enormously as children grow and the itinerary that works brilliantly with a baby probably won’t impress a teenager.

Travelling with children isn’t about abandoning culture, adventure or the destinations you really want to experience. It’s about planning the trip around the stage your family is actually at. That might mean fewer hotel changes with a baby, more flexibility with a toddler, hands-on experiences for younger children or giving teenagers some ownership over the plans.

The right flight times, room arrangements, transfers and pace can completely change how enjoyable a family holiday feels and they’re exactly the details I consider when creating a tailor-made family trip.

Where should you travel in October?
October is one of those quietly brilliant months to travel. Autumn colours are putting on a show in one part of the world, the dry season is beginning elsewhere, Europe still has pockets of sunshine and some destinations are hitting their sweet spot for adventure.

Cambodia — The rains begin to ease, leaving the countryside incredibly lush and Angkor’s temples surrounded by greenery, with fewer visitors than during peak season.
Bhutan — Clearer autumn weather, Himalayan views and excellent trekking conditions make October one of the loveliest times to explore this extraordinary mountain kingdom.
Nepal — Peak trekking season for good reason: clearer skies, superb mountain visibility and some of the best conditions of the year for heading into the Himalayas.
South Africa — Spring has arrived in the Cape, whales can still be spotted around Hermanus and it’s a fantastic month for combining Cape Town, the Winelands, Garden Route and safari.
Mauritius — Warm, generally dry and sunny, with comfortable temperatures before the hotter and more humid summer months arrive. Brilliant for beach time with plenty to explore beyond it.
New England — October brings the classic fall road trip: fiery foliage, pretty towns, scenic drives and crisp autumn days across states including Vermont and New Hampshire.
Cyprus — One of my favourite options for squeezing out some late European sunshine, with warm seas, pleasant temperatures and considerably fewer visitors than in summer.

Been there before? Here’s where to go next… ✈️ Volume 2
Because sometimes the best trip to a country isn’t your first one.

Your first visit might be about the icons: Santorini sunsets, the Canadian Rockies, Las Vegas or Halong Bay. But go back a second time and you can venture further, slow things down and discover the places that made you realise just how much you missed the first time around.

There’s something I love about returning to a country you think you already know. You’ve ticked off the places everyone talks about, so the second trip can be less about the checklist and more about digging a little deeper.
And often? That’s when a destination gets really interesting.

Save this for the next time you catch yourself saying, “Oh, I’ve already been there…”
Because there’s nearly always another trip waiting.

Two weeks in Thailand
If you’re visiting Thailand for the first time, this is how I’d spend 14 nights.

Start amongst the temples, markets, street food and organised chaos of Bangkok, before heading north to Chiang Mai for a slower pace, incredible food, beautiful temples and a taste of northern Thailand.
Then swap city life for the jungle and rainforest of Elephant Hills, where limestone cliffs, jungle, wildlife and floating camps offer a completely different side to the country.
And finally? Khao Lak. Five nights of beautiful beaches, tropical sunsets and doing very little at all after a fairly adventure-packed first week.

One important caveat: the best Thailand itinerary changes with the seasons.
For travel during our UK summer months, I’d usually swap Khao Lak for Koh Samui, where the weather tends to be more favourable at that time of year. Thailand isn’t a destination where I’d recommend simply picking a beach resort and hoping for the best as choosing the right coast for your travel dates can make a huge difference.
