We had a great ride last Sunday! We set out from Proper cafΓ© in Hassocks. We cycled on quiet routes to Warninglid. Most of us brought a packed lunch and sat on the grassy bank at the destination. Others went to the Half Moon pub for a roast dinner and a drink. It was a lovely occasion. Thanks to Sarah for leading. πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸ™πŸ₯ͺπŸŒ³πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

A journey of 1000 miles begins with the first pedal! A great e-bike ride across France was featured in the latest Cycle magazine. This was a trip by local rider and author Vic Ient from Lewes. He's planning to do another big ride this summer to raise funds for ambulances & humanitarian aid for Ukraine. He would be grateful for any donation to:

Starting on 9th July 2026, he will ride over 800 miles from Bilbao through France to England. This is his planned route:

New infrastructure! The previous cycle lane heading south into Brighton on the London Road A23 past Patcham has been altered to a shared bus/cycle/taxi lane. Lots of room if there's no one else around! The dangerous slip at the southern end of Patcham Peace Park has been closed. We welcome this. It was the site of a crash between a turning van driver and someone cycling southbound. This is better for people walking/wheeling/cycling. The lower speed limit on the A23 (for a short stretch) is welcome. Longer would have been better.
Several hazards remain, despite the new scheme and the (inadequate) pre-existing old cycle lanes. Side roads continue to feed in to the A23 and you're totally abandoned at the Carden Avenue roundabout. There are often close passes and drivers pull out of side roads across our path e.g. Tongdean Lane.
It is now more difficult turning right at Old London Road if you're heading northbound because the pedestrian refuge has been removed and a puffin crossing is being put in. Disappointingly not a toucan or parallel crossing. It might make sense to use the pre-existing toucan at South Woodlands and continue northbound from there rather than the new puffin which has not been designed for cycling across.
Most of the road has recently been resurfaced and is very smooth, without potholes.
The A23 northbound cycle lane has been left unchanged.
