Recently carried out a full strip and rebuild of this Westerbeke Diesel Engine at college. Really enjoyed carrying out this task. Making sure to take all the measurements required while disassembling the engine such as the straightness of the cylinder head, crankshaft main journals and crank pins, cylinder bore measurements horizontal and vertical at top middle and bottom, valve guide measurements making sure they were within tolerance to the workshop manual. Also making sure to lap the valves again when rebuilding to create a nice seal so no combustion gases leak out past the inlet valves, and re honing the cylinder bores to give that nice crosshatch surface for when re installing the pistons. The task was very successful and am happy to add this to my skill set and hope to carry out this task in the future🛥️⚙️🔧

Why carry out a Cylinder Leakage Test

A cylinder leakage test (also called a leak-down test) is done to assess the health of an engine’s internal components, particularly the pistons, rings, valves, and head gasket. This test helps identify issues such as:

Worn or damaged piston rings: If the rings are worn, the test will show air leaking from the cylinder, indicating a loss of compression.
Valve seat or valve seal issues: If the intake or exhaust valves are not seating properly, the test can show air escaping from the intake or exhaust manifold, suggesting a valve problem.
Blown head gasket: Air escaping into the cooling system or oil system during the test can point to a blown head gasket.
Cracked cylinder head or block: Air leakage through the engine’s cooling system or oil passage could indicate cracks in the head or block.
By performing a cylinder leakage test, you can pinpoint exactly where the air is leaking, making it easier to diagnose and fix the underlying issue, ultimately improving engine performance and preventing further damage.
