A popular visit, Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, visited the town in 1787 and was so inspired that he wrote the poem 'The Birks* of Aberfeldie'. Just six miles west of the town is Loch Tay. It is the largest loch in Perthshire, surrounded by mountains and hillside farms and cottages. As well as being the popular playground of sailors and watersports enthusiasts, the loch is home to 18 ancient dwellings called crannogs. Nearby to the north, Glen Lyon is often described as the loneliest and loveliest glen in Scotland. It has a wonderfully mystical atmosphere. Aberfeldy and surrounds are well worth a visit.

*A "birk" is a Scots word for birch tree.
