The tour highlighted the wide range of career opportunities in aviation to the students – we hope this visit has helped shape their future ambitions!

Today marks 80 years since the maiden flight of the de Havilland Chipmunk (DHC-1).

Designed as a primary trainer for military and civilian aviation, the Chipmunk served with the Air Forces of several nations, but its impact in the UK was particularly significant - shaping the careers of thousands of pilots.

In 1950, it entered service with the Royal Air Force; initially operating with University Air Squadrons, before going on to become the RAF’s primary training aircraft.

After a remarkable run as one of the most recognisable post-war trainers in British military aviation, the Chipmunk continues to serve in civil aviation today, as well as with the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight - a testament to its reliable design and durability.

At London Biggin Hill Airport, we’re proud to have de Havilland Chipmunk G-BXHA (originally WP925) based here at our resident company Shipping and Airlines - Biggin Hill, within their Historic Aircraft Collection.

Have you ever seen a Chipmunk in flight, or have any photos or memories of one? We would love to see them, feel free to share them below!📸
