Perched dramatically on the cliffs of Downhill Demesne in County Derry, Mussenden Temple is one of Northern Ireland's most striking landmarks. Inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Italy, this elegant circular building overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking views across the rugged coastline and the golden sands of Downhill Beach.
Built in 1785 by Frederick Augustus Hervey, the Earl Bishop of Derry, Mussenden Temple was originally designed as a library. Today, it stands proudly on the cliff edge, surrounded by sweeping coastal scenery and rich history. From its remarkable architecture to its spectacular setting, this iconic landmark is a must-see along Northern Ireland's Causeway Coastal Route.
