Alright everyone! Quick intro 👋
I'm Tommy, I'm 20 and I run TK Gardening Services.
I started TK because I was tired of seeing gardens that look like Jurassic Park, and because I'm trying to build something proper for me and my little brothers. Teaching them hard work early, and they are definitely cheaper than hiring staff.

For removal teams, 90% of delays are caused before we even lift a sofa. Here is what actually slows a move down and damages stuff:
What NOT to do when packing

1. Don't leave it until the night before: Half-packed kitchens are the biggest time killer. If the team has to stand around while you box things, you are paying for that time.

2. Don't use bin bags for everything: They rip, you can't stack them in the van, and they take twice the space. Fine for duvets and pillows, terrible for books, crockery, toys.

3. Don't overfill big boxes: A large box full of books will break and no one can lift it safely. Heavy stuff = small box. Light stuff = big box.

4. Don't leave empty space in boxes: Half-empty boxes crush when stacked. Fill gaps with paper, towels or clothes.

5. Don't use flimsy supermarket boxes: Fruit boxes with no lids collapse. Double-walled removal boxes are worth it. And don't use one strip of cheap tape - H-tape the top.

6. Don't pack rooms into one box: "Kitchen + bathroom + bedroom bits" means you have to open 10 boxes to find the kettle at the other end. One box = one room.

7. Don't leave drawers, wardrobes and fridges full: Chest of drawers with clothes is okay. Wardrobe full of clothes, desk drawers full of heavy files, fridge full of food - not okay. It makes furniture 3x heavier and breaks it.

8. Don't pack liquids badly: Shampoo, cooking oil, cleaning sprays leak everywhere. Bag them separately, keep them upright, and don't put them with electrics or bedding.

9. Don't wrap crockery in newspaper only: Ink transfers and it doesn't protect. Plates should be wrapped individually and packed on their edge, not flat.

10. Don't pack the stuff we legally can't take: Gas bottles, paint tins, petrol cans, chemicals, out-of-date fire extinguishers. Most removal insurance won't cover them.

11. Don't forget to label properly: "Fragile" on every box means nothing. Write the room AND what's inside + which way is up: e.g. "KITCHEN - glasses - FRAGILE - THIS WAY UP".

How to make it EASY for the removal team
This is how you get the best job and often save money:

1. Be fully packed when we arrive: Unless you have paid for a packing service, everything should be boxed, taped and ready by the doorways.

2. Dismantle what you said you would: Beds, trampolines, wall-mounted TVs, IKEA wardrobes. If you want us to do it, tell us beforehand so we bring tools and time.

3. Clear the run: Hallway, stairs, front door path and outside the house. Move cars so the van can get as close as possible. If you need a parking suspension or permit, sort it the day before.

4. Keep one "Do Not Move" corner: Documents, passports, keys, chargers, kettle, snacks, cleaning spray, kids' essentials and your overnight bag. Put it all in your car, not on the van.

5. Defrost and drain: Fridge freezer off 24 hours before, washing machine drained, hoses disconnected. We can't move a fridge full of water.

6. Keep pets and little ones out of the way: A dog in the hallway or a toddler running between boxes is a safety risk when carrying heavy furniture.

7. Tell us the truth on the quote: Extra shed, loft full to the brim, 4 flights of stairs, narrow access - mention it early. Surprises on the day slow everything down.

8. Bag your screws and fixings: Tape them to the furniture they came from in a small bag. Don't put all screws in one random tub.

9. Have payment and keys ready: Make sure someone is at both properties who can make decisions and sort payment. We have had whole vans waiting because no one had the new house keys.

Pro tip from the lads: If you can, stack all your boxed-up boxes in one room downstairs. It cuts loading time by 30% because we are not doing stairs 50 times.
