Last year, the historic 19th century lime kiln at Minninglow was beautifully restored, earning it the ‘Restoration of an Historic Garden or Landscape’ award from the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust. This Grade II listed limestone structure stands as a testament to the area’s industrial heritage and its role in shaping the landscape of the High Peak Trail 🏞️
The kiln, towering five meters high and set into the hillside, is believed to have produced lime for the construction of the Cromford and High Peak Railway. This impressive feature, built from limestone blocks, adds to Minninglow’s charm and historic significance.
After the wet winter of 2019/2020, a major collapse revealed an incredible surprise: the last batch of limestone, never fired, still sitting in the kiln and preserved in time. Today, visitors can appreciate not only the kiln’s scale, but also its story as part of Derbyshire’s rich industrial past.
