Restoring the wooden blocks - it’s the details which
make SKÅL one of the most beautifully restored classic yachts from 1930.

Every block was carefully taken apart, hand sanded, varnished and then put back together, some older blocks with their original bronze fixings and all with their new hand crafted leather covers.

When we purchased SKÅL in 2023 she was in need of extensive repairs. The entire backbone needed replacing, including the original oak keel. At nearly 100 years old it was time to give her a new lease of life. With the help of Tsikis Boatyard who have been building and maintaining wooden boats for decades, we began by replacing the lower stem with laminated Iroko, shaped to precisely match the existing form of the hull.

SKÅL - Philip L. Rhodes design no.1430 was built in 1930 by Casey Boatbuilding Co. in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, USA.

Skål was commissioned by two well known yachtsmen for the 1930 Bermuda race and soon after purchased by Richard F Lawrence for the 1931 Transatlantic Race. Despite coming 2nd to Dorade in the transatlantic race she had been largely forgotten. We hope to bring her back into the limelight.

The beauty of traditional craftsmanship. For a wooden yacht nearing a century at sea, the traditional method of hauling out on a sled is far kinder to her old frames than a modern travel lift. A cradle is custom built from Skal’s lines drawings to support the hull perfectly from lift until launch. October 2023
