As a young boy growing up in Suva, Peni Ravitu spent many of his school holidays in Nadi watching aircraft take off and land.
Curious about how the airport operated and inspired by family members working in aviation, he would ask questions about the aircraft, the people behind the scenes and what it took to keep flights moving safely.
Years later, that childhood fascination has become a career.
Today, Peni is one of Fiji Airports' eight Notice to Air Men (NOTAM) Officers, working within the Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) Department to ensure critical aviation information reaches pilots, airlines, air traffic controllers and other aviation stakeholders.
A former student of Tilak High School in Lautoka, Peni joined Fiji Airports in his first professional role and has embraced the responsibility that comes with helping support aviation safety.
“At Fiji Airports, the information we provide is critical. It helps ensure aviation stakeholders are aware of changes or conditions that may affect flight operations,” he said.
As part of the only AIS office that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Peni and his colleagues play an important role in supporting the safe and efficient movement of aircraft through Fiji's airspace.
While travellers may never see the work that happens behind the scenes, Peni takes pride in knowing that his role contributes to the safety of every flight arriving into and departing from Fiji.
“I'm grateful to do this job and honoured to be one of Fiji's NOTAM Officers.
“Contributing to aviation safety is one of my greatest achievements.”
From watching aircraft from the sidelines to helping keep Fiji's skies safe, Peni's journey is a reminder that sometimes the dreams we have as children can lead us exactly where we're meant to be.
