Everyone wants to get paid - and I ain't got no money, honey! 😂

The world of yachting seems to now be flooded with 'influencers' - just like the rest of the world.

I maintain an old skool yachting mentality, which is that we don't film any kind of video content on boats for the purpose of social media without approval.

An occasional photo was posted here and there with permission. And with permission from a couple of celebs - we shared a few 'show off' pics to our friends and family back home.

As crew we were told very early on that unless approved - the boat / including it's intellectual property, was to remain discrete - always!

Even this photo of me onboard an undisclosed SY had to be approved by the Captain before I could post it.

I understand the world has changed, and now many charter boats are using social media as their main source of advertising. Which will include high quality footage / drone footage of the boat and it's crew, seemingly having a fantastic time onboard. Looks glamorous right?!

A true yachtie knows that most of this is all just smoke and mirrors. Yeah, there are lots of good times onboard. But to pretend this is the reality onboard 100% of the time, is really only intended for the millionaires / billionaires (and now apparently a trillionaire - just what the world needed! 🤣), who charter these boats.

I keep banging on about it - but the more we show the reality of this industry - the less flooded it's going to become.

In the meantime, I'm going to keep posting my old face as Co Founder, because a) I don't really agree with the whole yachtie influencer thing. I don't have time to be making sure you've received permission to film to be honest, and b) I ain't got no money, honey to pay you anyway! 🤣

Meet the Crewdar Founders!

Fiona Grey (CEO / Co Founder): I’ve worn my heart on my sleeve as the face of our company since day one. I’ve worked on boats ranging from 28m to 69m, both sailing and motor, in the capacity of both Stew and Deck Stew. In 2013 I finished my final season six months pregnant, and stepped off Amadeus as crew for the last time. I met so many unbelievable people. Saw some unbelievable places (mostly through a porthole 😅). I loved the camaraderie, the banter, the rituals (maybe not being peer pressured into shooting as many Jägerbombs in La Rascasse on your birthday as years you were turning 🤮). But I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard or had so much fun in my entire life. So when I was given the opportunity to create a business that not only allowed me to be with my family, but also figuratively get my feet back in the water, I knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I was going to need to work my arse off in order to make it succeed!

Johnny Wilkinson (CTO / Co Founder): Johnny unapologetically has no background in yachting. He is 100% tech. He's not only my coding / tech machine. He’s also my legal guru, having studied law at Cambridge University. Johnny is part of that list of entrepreneurs who dropped out of university to create a startup, saying "law is boring". I can’t help but agree…. With a string of successful hospitality and data science tech startups already, Johnny is thrilled to have the opportunity to sink his teeth into the sexy industry of superyachts. Johnny thrives in his natural habitat of a dark cinema in our basement, pumping out dev for me on demand.

We’re proud of how quickly we’ve moved from not only building a mobile app - to building a web based version - to building a service provider platform (launching soon 🚀), and this summer we plan to release a full yacht management suite! We’ve already gained recognition and respect from many of the yachting heavyweights, but we've also built a brand that is now recognised by thousands of yacht crew worldwide. We have managed to achieve all of this in under two years 🙌. The more milestones we hit, the harder and faster we move. Giddyup!

Full disclaimer: The attached pic has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm about to write - just milking the 'Frenchie photo opportunity' 😂

This week I've been feeling particularly homesick for some reason...🫤

I moved to the EU in 2011, and apart from a couple of short stints in Oz with the kids, and one year in the UK. The South of France and Mallorca have been my home base for many many years now.

As crew, there are going to be times where you feel you could almost die, longing to be home amongst your friends and family. To be at peace with your creature comforts.

I personally used to lock myself in the crockery cupboard in the pantry on my breaks, having D&M’s with my mamma on a weekly basis.

I wouldn't have survived the time onboard without this grounding.

We all need a vent from time to time. And when you find your people - capable of lending an ear no matter what - you need to hold on to those people and celebrate them.

Personally, I had very little crew drama onboard. So nothing much to complain about. In fact, I pretty much loved everything about my crew and my job.

But I had been dumped (over Skype 🤮), just a week before joining the boat. It was a long term relationship - and the shock / pain / trauma was something that was going to take time to recover from.

Many of you will go through not only that, but also losing family members, pets, missed weddings, births, birthdays, anniversaries....you name it!

There are so many personal sacrifices that need to be made in order to survive yachting.

My advice is this - find one or two trusted people, either onboard - or as yachties, your boat family stretches worldwide.

Firstly - It's important to make sure you take a deep breath and process all your emotions before reaching out for advice.

This isn’t always the easiest path to take, but trust me - it is absolutely the best.

And then when you really feel you need an outsourced opinion. Choose these people well, and respect their words wisely.

In my opinion, this is almost the only thing that will get you through, not only an intense season, but simply life in general.

Monaco GP 2026 weekend inspired story on the way!

Growing up in the 80s, the Ferrari 308 GTS was the epitome of cool.

The 308 was the car that became TV famous for not only Magnum P.I, but it was also the car Christie Brinkley drove fast whilst filming the iconic scene where she was flirting with Clark Griswold (aka Chevy Chase).

I watched National Lampoons Vacation on repeat, while lying on our white s**g pile carpet in our mid century modern house. It was pure 80s perfection 👌

I’ve dreamed of owning this car since I first laid eyes on it.

Back in 2012 my Chief Stew and I drove to our storage unit in Cannes to pick up a few bits and pieces.

Sitting next door was a classic car showroom.

And there she was….the Ferrari 308 GTS. In red. With the cream leather seats! 🤤 She was immaculate.

I had more than enough money to buy it, as we’d just finished a back to back charter season with unbelievable tips. I got back to the boat buzzing with excitement about driving her through the South of France. Weekend lunch’s in Italy. It felt like I was about to live one of my wildest dreams!

Instead I fell pregnant and that dream was - p**f - gone! 💨🤣

Obviously I don’t regret a thing because I’m obsessed with my two gorgeous girls - they are my world 💕

But there are two mortals to this story:

1. Best not to screw the crew if you want a Ferrari 😂
2. Make the most of your earning time in yachting. Save your money and have a safety net. And this is even more important for all you girls. Because the second you give up your earning power to have children - it’s very hard to get that power back.

This model of Ferrari has now appreciated in value by between 100%-150% in the last 15 years, and will only continue to appreciate.

I have my eyes on the prize again, and I swear I will own her one day 😉

😜
