"Once in a lifetime" 🌊✨
During one of our recent trips under the bright mid-day sun, we and our guests witnessed something truly extraordinary right at the surface: a giant Pyrosome (often called the Fire Salp or Unicorn of the Sea)! 🦄🔮
While it might look like a single creature or even a jellyfish, it is actually a free-floating colony made up of thousands of microscopic individuals called zooids, all tightly packed into a hollow, gelatinous tube.
Why is this so special?
• Deep-Sea Giants: Pyrosomes usually spend their lives hundreds of meters down in the dark depths of the ocean. Thanks to the deep underwater trenches and currents around Gran Canaria, these gentle giants are occasionally carried up to the surface.
• A Living Glowstick: The name Pyrosome comes from Greek, meaning "fire body." If you were to see it at night, it would light up the dark ocean with a brilliant, glowing bioluminescent light.
• Harmless and Gentle: Despite its alien-like appearance and impressive size (this one was about 1 meter long and 20 cm wide!), it is completely harmless. It slowly moves through the currents by gently filtering water for food.
Seeing one of these in crystal-clear water during daytime is a true bucket-list moment for any ocean lover. Nature never ceases to amaze us! 🐋💻
Have you ever spotted anything this unique on the water? 👇
