Santander is not a city frequented by most international tourists, but as the summers get hotter and hotter it is definitely going to get more popular.

In contrast with the dry and sunny Costa del Sol or areas of Andalucía, Cantabria is much more rainy and mountanous, but that also means it’s a lot more green, something I loved!

The population is under 200,000 and you can pretty much walk the whole city, making it nice for a relaxed weekend trip.

Have you been to Santander? Where else in Cantabria would you recommend?

🏛️If you’ve lived it Spain for a while, it’s probably time to learn a bit about the government of Spain (I was definitely a bit ignorant! 🙋‍♀️)

I had walked by the Senate many times and found out they have free tours, so I booked one and it was great!

Tours are only in Spanish though, so I wouldn’t recommend going if you don’t have an advanced language level or a friend that can interpret for you.

I loved that there was both a larger, modern place for plenary sessions and that they’ve kept the original chamber pretty much exactly the same.

The tour lasted about an hour, which was perfect. We also got to see the gorgeous library and learn some history through four historic paintings.

🇪🇸 The bureaucracy in Spain is not exaggerated and the struggle is real. I was thankful I was able to get an appointment to register for the CL@VE in just two days, but it meant spending the whole morning traveling outside of Madrid to get this document.

🚊 However, I have to give a shoutout to Madrid’s transportation, which is amazing. I took the metro there and busses back and everything was quick and easy.

Have you struggled to get documents when moving to Spain?

🥘 Sometimes I just can’t with the late meal times in Spain. Dinner is never before 8:00 and that would still be considered very early.

🍲 Honestly, that’s probably the thing that is hardest for me to adjust to and I probably never will. Fortunately, in big cities it’s now much more common to find non-stop places, but this was a Sunday and a holiday and just had to laugh because the restaurant clientel was all non-Spanish people like myself who were starving. 🤭

If you live in Spain, how have you adjusted?

I’ve traveled a lot, but there are still places that I don’t know about, like this hidden gem in Spain, Gaztelugatxe.

🏰 It’s an hermitage on an island in the ocean. It was where they filmed the Game of Thrones scenes for Dragonstone in season 7, so it might look familiar.

Check out the YouTube video to find out exactly how to visit it, because it’s a bit difficult.

☕️ Honestly I’m not a fan of coffee nor soccer but I do love a fun cafe setting and Starbucks Reserve Bernabéu is definitely that!

🍸 At the Reserve you can order alcoholic drinks and do special coffee tastings! Just make sure to call ahead because this is a popular place for special events and the Reserve section might be closed.

🏟️ The Starbucks is free to visit but if you want to actually enter Bernabéu you need to pruchase a tour; there is no actual entrance through the Starbucks.

🎢 The Monte Igueldo amusement park in San Sebastián, (Donostia in Basque) Spain is absolutely epic! The rides are nothing to write home about, but the location and views are amazing!

💵 You’ll need to pay about €5,50 to take the funicular up but then entrance to the park is free and you pay a couple euros per ride.

💦 The log flume ride is probably the most famous, as you go right along the side of the cliff.

🌍 I’ve spent more than 8 years of the last 25 living in Europe (plus 3 years on other continents) and these are the American habits that I have let go and no longer do.

They say old habits die hard, but adapting hasn’t been a difficult process, just a slow and steady one. And most of these changes are good changes as I transition to a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle.

What habits from your home country have you stopped after living abroad?

🏛️The line might be long, but it’s worth the wait!

🏛️The Prado Museum in Madrid is one of the best in the world, and it is also FREE every day! The last two hours before closing is free admission, so that’s Monday to Saturday 18:00-20:00 and Sundays 17:00-19:00.

🏛️While you do have to wait in line, it moves fairly fast and you’ll save yourself the normal 15 euro admission price. And honestly, there’s a line during the regular hours, too!

🏝️ Tenerife is known for it’s beaches, but there is so much more than that! Each island in the Canary Islands is a little bit different and each area of Tenerife is unique, too.

🛌 If you’ve never had a duvet cover before, you need this tip!

European bedding uses a fitted sheet and a duvet with a duvet cover. As I’ve lived abroad, I’ve come to love duvets and I won’t go back to the top sheet and comforter, but it’s true that putting the cover on the duvet is a challenge.

Do you have a different way for putting on the cover? Let me know 👇
