A senior flight attendant bids for a dream trip to Paris, Rome, Tokyo, or Sydney.
They have zero intention of working it.
Instead, they sell it to a junior crew member for cash.
United just started firing people for doing exactly this.
The flight attendants' union confirms the airline has seen a sharp increase in terminations for trip-selling over the past several months.
Their argument: United is inferring guilt just because someone bid on a great trip and then quickly handed it off, without catching an actual cash exchange in the act.
This isn't new.
United has been warning crew members against this since at least 2019.
American Airlines has been cracking down on it for years too — their union even helped write anti-trip-selling language into the latest contract.
But the practice never really stopped.
Some flight attendants got sloppy, discussing trades online using code words like swapping "cookies" for "kisses."
Those messages don't look great when they show up in a disciplinary hearing.
Not every airline treats this the same way.
Southwest's contract actually allows flight attendants to pay someone to cover their trip.
United, American, and Delta all forbid it.
The union says it plans to fight every single termination and push for reinstatement.
Supporters of the crackdown say seniority shouldn't become a side business.
Others argue the real problem is a scheduling system that naturally creates a market for the most valuable routes.
Why not let it happen?
Someone doesn't want the trip, someone else needs the money, and everyone walks away happy. It's been happening for years and nobody was really hurt.
Should flight attendants be allowed to sell or transfer the trips they earn through seniority, or is United right to fire employees over it?
