Harald Wiegand ist seit sechs Jahren Werksleiter bei Schalke und arbeitet seit über 39 Jahren für das Unternehmen. Er begann seine Karriere im Vorgängerunternehmen, der Schalker Eisenhütte. Harald durchlief verschiedene Positionen mit zunehmender Verantwortung und sammelte Erfahrung im Schwermaschinenbau, insbesondere im Lokomotivbau – vom Stahlbau bis zum fertigen Produkt.

Zu Haralds Aufgaben gehören Arbeitssicherheit, Warenannahme, Qualitätskontrolle, Kommissionierung, mechanische, pneumatische und elektrische Endmontage sowie Verpackung. Darüber hinaus fallen interne Sonderprojekte, wie der Bau einer neuen Teststrecke, in seinen Verantwortungsbereich.

Eine der zentralen Herausforderungen für alle bei Schalke ist die effiziente Konstruktion und Fertigung kleiner Losgrößen unter Einhaltung höchster Qualitätsstandards. Dank des Engagements unserer motivierten Mitarbeiter – von der Verwaltung bis zur Inbetriebnahme – konnten wir dies in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten erfolgreich umsetzen.

„Diese Herausforderung treibt mich auch persönlich an: alles planmäßig umzusetzen und gleichzeitig bei Bedarf spontan Entscheidungen treffen zu können, die sofortiges Handeln erfordern. Es ist immer wieder ein befriedigender Moment, wenn wir ein Projekt erfolgreich abschließen und eine weitere Lokomotive unser Werk auf dem Weg zum Kunden verlässt.“

Harald Wiegand has been Schalke’s Plant Manager for 6 years, and has been working with Schalke for more than 39 years, first joining the team under Schalke’s predecessor company, the Schalker Eisenhütte. Harald advanced through several positions of increasing responsibility, gaining experience in heavy machinery manufacturing, particularly in the construction of locomotives–from steel fabrication to the finished product.

Harald’s responsibilities include occupational safety, goods receipt, quality control, order picking, mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical final assembly, as well as packaging. In addition, internal special projects, such as the construction of a new test track, also fall within his scope.

One of the key challenges for everyone at Schalke is the efficient design and production of small batch sizes while maintaining high quality standards. Thanks to the commitment of our motivated employees—from administration to commissioning—we have been highly successful in this regard over the past decades.�

“This challenge is also what drives me personally: implementing everything according to plan, while being able to make individual decisions that require immediate action when necessary. It is always a rewarding moment when we successfully complete a project and another locomotive leaves our facility on its way to the customer.”

Schalke developed the four-axle GMF 4/4 287 diesel electric locomotive especially for the needs of the “Infrastructure” department of Switzerland’s Rhaetian Railway (RhB). Its design fulfils a broad range of specific requirements for special circumstances, as the railway has a narrow loading gauge (tunnel gauge) and a low axle load of 16 tonnes. The narrow, metre-gauge track includes small curve radii as tight as 40 metres. The locomotive is particularly suitable for high altitude areas with steep gradients of 7% as an adhesion railway. Moreover, it is reliable under extreme climatic conditions: its application range stretches from temperatures of -35 °C to +40 °C and it even runs on fine, crystalline snow.�
