CityWalk project CityWalk project – Towards energy responsible places: establishing walkable cities in the Danube Region

CityWalk project helps cities in the Danube Region to reduce emissions, noise and to become safer, better places to live, by increasing the role of more sustainable forms of mobility in the urban transport mix, especially active transport forms – like walking and biking. To do so the main focus of project is to improve the key conditions of walkability.

The legendary Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo steps down after 12 years in office. Few 21st-century city leaders have reshaped their cities as profoundly as she has — making it worth reflecting on her legacy.

Over the past decades, car traffic in central Paris has decreased by more than 60%, with two-thirds of this reduction achieved during Hidalgo’s leadership. At the same time, air quality has significantly improved: the concentration of the most harmful pollutants has dropped, meaning that children in Paris today have a much lower risk of respiratory diseases than before. This is not just data — it is quality of life.

Hidalgo followed a clear vision: cities are for people, not for cars. Based on this, she implemented bold and often controversial, yet highly consistent measures:

🚗 Removal of 60,000 on-street parking spaces

🚶‍♀️ Transformation of streets into pedestrian zones and school streets

🌳 Creation of new public spaces and green areas

🚲 Development of over 1,000 km of cycling infrastructure

⚠️ Introduction of a general 30 km/h speed limit in central areas

🚫 Restriction of through-traffic in the city center

The banks of the Seine, once dominated by cars, are now promenades, parks, and vibrant public spaces. Entire inner-city districts have become quieter, filled with pedestrians, cyclists, terraces, and life — instead of traffic noise.

The transformation is not only physical, but also economic and social:

hospitality and retail are thriving, people are spending more time in public space, and cycling has become so popular that bike “traffic jams” are now a common sight.

Paris is also actively implementing the concept of the “15-minute city”, ensuring that essential services — shops, schools, parks, pharmacies — are accessible within a short walk or bike ride. Most recently, the city decided to create 500 additional school streets and pedestrian zones.

Perhaps the most important lesson: none of this happened overnight. It took 12 years of consistent political commitment, debate, courage, and a clear strategic direction. Hidalgo did not step back in the face of criticism — she repeatedly sought and received public support to continue.

Today, even political opponents no longer question the fundamentals of this urban policy. That may be the greatest achievement: when a once-radical vision becomes the new normal.

Paris shows that even a large, historic European city can undergo radical transformation — if there is vision, courage, and persistence.

Partners of the CityWalk2.0 consortium gathered for their 5th partner meeting in Ruma, Serbia. The two-day event has a full agenda filled with workshops, walkshops, site visits and presentations about the tasks to be still implemented in the coming months.
During the first day of the meeting a very interesting and useful workshop took place that supported pilot cities in planning their local policy proposals. The activity served as a valuable tool for transnational knowledge exchange.
City partners will go home from the event full with ideas and plans to still implement in connection to the commitment of decision-makers to lead the change.

📍 CITYWALK2.0 at international stage – sharing knowledge beyond borders!

Last week, the CITYWALK2.0 project was presented at the Smart and Sustainable Planning for Cities and Regions conference, organized by Eurac Research at NOI Techpark in Bolzano/Bozen, Italy. 🇮🇹

Within the track “Mobility Systems: Backbones for Smart and Sustainable Cities and Regions”, our partner Urbasofia, represented by Valentina Stan, introduced the CITYWALK2.0 project to an international, highly professional audience. The presentation focused on how we assess the impacts of pilot actions for travel behaviour change and street redesign, as well as on the project’s framework, objectives, and first preliminary results from partner cities.

Moments like this show how CITYWALK2.0 is contributing not only at local level, but also to wider European and scientific discussions on sustainable urban mobility. 🌍🚶‍♀️🚲

👏 Congratulations to URBASOFIA for this excellent representation of the project!

In CITYWALK2.0 every technical pilot is accompanied by a strong community campaign, because real change in travel behaviour requires not only infrastructure but also clear communication and awareness-raising. In Ptuj, the pilot action around the installation of totems near schools is supported by a rich mix of offline and online campaign tools designed to reach children, parents, teachers, drivers, and the wider community. Offline, the CITYWALK2.0 messages appear on buses, billboards at bus stations, a large banner, posters placed across the city, and canvas visuals displayed in schools, ensuring continuous presence in the urban environment. Online, the city launched a creative TikTok challenge and regular Facebook posts to engage younger audiences and spread the message quickly and widely.

The overall aim of the campaign in Ptuj is to highlight the implemented pilot action, inform the local community about the importance of sustainable mobility and road safety, and connect local stakeholders through joint activities. At the same time, it offers something innovative and creative for the city, helping to make everyday mobility cleaner, safer, and healthier—especially for children on their daily routes to school. While children and young people are a key focus of the campaign, parents, teachers, drivers, local residents, and decision-makers also play an important role, as their involvement strengthens the impact and supports longer-term change.

Through this mix of tools and target groups, Ptuj’s campaign demonstrates how community engagement and communication can effectively support travel behaviour change and contribute to a more responsible, walkable, and people-centred urban environment. More inspiring CITYWALK2.0 pilots will follow soon.

Meet our pilots - Ptuj, Slovenia! 🇸🇮

Our next featured CITYWALK2.0 pilot comes from the beautiful historic city of Ptuj, where the team is implementing a creative and impactful street redesign initiative: Totems in front of schools in Ptuj. The city installed a series of colourful, eye-catching totems in front of multiple school buildings. These totems aim to:
- increase the visibility and safety of school zones,
- encourage slower car traffic,
- promote active mobility among children and parents,
- and create a more people-friendly environment around educational institutions.

Pilot locations include:
OŠ Olga Meglič • OŠ Ljudevita Pivka • OŠ Breg • OŠ Mladika • OŠ Ljudski vrt (including Grajena branch) • ŠC Ptuj (Volkmerjeva & Vičava locations) • Glasbena šola Karol Pahor

This multi-location approach shows Ptuj’s strong commitment to making school surroundings safer, more inviting, and more walkable for its youngest citizens.

Stay tuned — more inspiring pilot actions are coming soon!

🌍 CityWalk2.0 on the international stage in Bucharest! 🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️✨

We are proud to share that Valentina Stan (URBASOFIA) presented CityWalk2.0 last week at the final conference of the URBACT SMALL – Sustainable Mobility for All project in Bucharest.

The event brought together leading national institutions — including the University of Bucharest, UEFISCDI, the Ministry of Development, Public Works and Administration — as well as NGOs and international guests.

Valentina introduced our project’s objectives, early pilot results, key documents, and the progress we are making in promoting active urban mobility. Her presentation sparked great interest, especially regarding our travel behaviour change pilot actions, effective strategies, and lessons learned — including the bureaucratic challenges of pilot implementation.

We are delighted that CityWalk2.0 was featured alongside other European initiatives such as PROWD (DUT), PUMA (URBACT) and PopUpUrbanSpaces (Interreg Central Europe).

A warm thank you to Valentina for representing the project and strengthening our visibility across Europe! 💚

🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ The tradition continues!

Every CITYWALK project meeting ends with our iconic Beatles-style zebra photo, and the Budva partner meeting was no exception! 🇲🇪✨

This time, our “CityWalk legends” once again stepped onto the crosswalk to celebrate teamwork, creativity, and the shared passion for making our cities more walkable. Because walking together is what CITYWALK2.0 is all about! 👣💚

As part of the tactical transit pilot, the city launched an impressive offline campaign that brought active mobility messages right into the heart of urban life. From billboards and cylindrical advertising columns to citylight posters, Nyíregyháza’s streets were filled with eye-catching visuals encouraging cycling and greener urban mobility.

At the same time, an online campaign complemented these efforts — using the same creative graphic designs to reach citizens across digital platforms.

We’re happy to share a glimpse of both the offline and online campaign designs, showcasing how visibility and creativity can work hand in hand for a more walkable and bike-friendly city. 🌍💚

🌆 Get ready - tomorrow is World Cities Day! 🌍
Every year on October 31, the world celebrates sustainable, inclusive, and forward-looking cities - a moment to reflect on how urban spaces can better serve the people who live in them.
This year’s theme, “People-Centered Urban Design,” couldn’t align more closely with the mission of CITYWALK2.0. Across the Danube Region, our partner cities are testing and co-creating ways to promote active mobility, reclaim public space, and design streets made for people - not just for cars. 🚶‍♀️🚲
For us, building people-centered cities is about more than improving infrastructure - it’s about connection, accessibility, and shared ownership of urban space. Together, we’re shaping greener, more livable, and more walkable cities for everyone. 💚
Let’s celebrate cities that put people first - today, tomorrow, and every day!
