This Kinard classroom sent us an update from back home, and the whole group is wearing matching “I ❤️ Miguel” shirts as a shout-out to the driver from their Expedition with us… we had to share it!

We just wrapped up hosting an incredible group of nursing students from Minnesota State Moorhead ()!

They spent nine days in Costa Rica learning directly from healthcare providers, clinics, and communities. 👩‍⚕️

It’s such a privilege to create opportunities like this, where students can ask questions, have real conversations with doctors and nurses, compare Costa Rica’s public and private systems to those in the U.S., and see what healthcare looks like across borders.

At HNE, we always try to build in those in-between moments that make an experience truly memorable like shared meals, meaningful conversations, and time to move your body and explore the area.

Because at the end of the day, healthcare isn’t just about medicine. It’s about people!

So you’ve decided to start planning a group travel experience.

Maybe you’re a teacher planning a student trip, a school administrator organizing experiential learning abroad, or someone trying to coordinate travel for a large family or friend group. You may notice big travel companies everywhere: flashy ads, pre-made itineraries- some even offer commissions for group leaders.

But before you book with a major tour company, I’d like to offer a perspective on why traveling with a smaller, more intentional company, especially one with deep roots in the country you’re visiting, might be the better fit. Here’s what we’ve seen over the years and what we hear most from our travelers.

Deep in the Monteverde cloud forest, you’re moving quietly, hiking with your group, when everything pauses. Your HNE guide stops, lifts their binoculars, and suddenly—you can feel their excitement.

😍 A flash of green. A glimpse of red. It’s the Resplendent Quetzal.

This extraordinary bird is part of the trogon family, and one of ten trogon species found in Costa Rica. It lives high in the cloud forest, typically above 4,000 feet, where mist, moss, and towering trees create the perfect habitat.

Males are especially striking, with iridescent green plumage and tail feathers that can grow up to a meter long, trailing behind them like ribbons through the canopy. Despite how vivid they are, they’re quiet, elusive, and easy to miss if you don’t know where and how to look.

Then it’s your turn. The binoculars are in your hands. You find it. And for a moment, it doesn’t feel real that something this vivid exists outside of a screen, right here in the wild.
