Brazil Express Customs Clearance Tips
Brazil is one of the countries in the world known for its difficult customs clearance procedures and high tariffs.
It's not uncommon for the value of goods to be higher than the tariffs, so when shipping to Brazil, it's usually important to confirm with the recipient whether customs clearance is possible.
For general shipments, confirm whether the recipient is willing to pay the tariffs to avoid a shipment return due to non-payment.
Express delivery services from China to Brazil include DHL, UPS, FEDEX, and EMS. EMS has relatively strong customs clearance capabilities and will return the shipment free of charge if customs clearance isn't possible.
However, it can take a long time.
There are several key points to note when clearing customs in Brazil:
1. Provide the Customs Commodity Code (NCM) (equivalent to my country's HS Code). This code corresponds to a detailed description of the product, including ingredients and processing techniques. Some NCM-compliant goods require an import license, which typically takes 15-30 days to obtain.
2. All imported mail sent to Brazil requires the recipient's tax ID number. Brazilian tax numbers are divided into individual and corporate tax numbers. Individual tax numbers are called CPF codes, formatted as 000.000.000-00, while corporate tax numbers are called CNPJ codes, formatted as 00.000.000/0000-00.
3. Brazilian customs conducts strict inspections on imported products and cracks down on under-declarations. Therefore, shippers must declare truthfully, ensuring the declared value matches the value of the goods. If customs determines that a malicious under-declaration or false declaration has been made, shippers will face hefty fines, delays, and customs issues.
