Things are looking up here!

China's imports and exports reached a total of 40 trillion yuan in 2022, an increase of 7.7% YoY. Exports to major trading partners and Belt and Road countries have grown rapidly, with solar cells and lithium batteries increasing by 67.8% and 86.7% respectively.

Chinese auto companies also exported 593,000 new energy vehicles in the first 11 months of 2022, double the amount from the previous year, showing the global market's close link to 'Made in China' and China's position as a dominant 'world factory.' (Data source: CMG)

Foxconn's major factory in Zhengzhou, China has resumed production at peak capacity, with around 2000 workers on various production lines, including testing, packaging, and assembly.

While the pandemic caused disruptions at many factories in China, it's expected that production will return to normal levels soon, especially after the Chinese New Year holiday.

Keep in mind that the situation may vary depending on the region and industry, so it's a good idea to check with your Chinese counterparts for the latest updates on their operations.

Good news!

As of this week, we are witnessing a much livelier Shanghai already. Streets are filled with cars, malls and shops have more customers, and today's food court at our office building was packed with people for lunch.

We are happy to see this obvious and super speedy recovery in our CBD.

Furthermore, from Sunday 8/Jan onwards China is opening its borders. This means that after 3 long years, we'll finally be welcoming foreign visitors into China again, and Chinese locals can travel overseas. This is excellent news for the global tourism industry.

In 2019, 155 million Chinese travelled abroad spending $254.6 billion, almost equally as much as the GDP of Vietnam! (source: Reuters)

The past month has been challenging in China across all industries. Without a doubt, our manufacturing and exporting sector has been hit too. Although the official lockdowns are a thing of the past in China, factory production has almost ground to a halt due to the high infection rate among factory workers and their families.

On top of (and because of) this, most factories have decided to close early for the Lunar New Year Holidays (22/Jan) this year. They will be resuming work after the CNY holidays, somewhere in mid-Feb.

Getting our clients' urgent orders completed and shipped with minimal delays has definitely been a test of our team's procurement management ability! It required meticulous planning, tight communication, and very importantly, the ability to think on the fly when hiccups were encountered at every step of procurement.

Thankfully, today, this batch of bags is ready just in time and will be making its way to the USA.

After three years of zero-tolerance measures, China has been adjusting its approach in the past weeks.

The latest promising news is that mandatory quarantine upon arrival for international travel will be lifted from January 8th 2023.

Hopefully, we will be welcoming international visitors to this meeting space again soon.

For a while now, international travel to China has been a struggle. But since China's recent adjustment to the pandemic approach, more frequent international travel is on the horizon.

As of now, there haven't been full official announcements on the relaxing of travel policies yet, but it is anticipated that Q1 of 2023 will allow for more incoming travel with fewer quarantine days. And if we allow ourselves to be hopeful, Q2 could be when the "quarantine upon arrival" requirement is scrapped.

We are looking forward to learning what 2023 will bring... and whom we shall have the honour of welcoming to visit Shanghai for a nice cup of coffee in our cosy meeting space.

"China factories only accept order quantities that are very high, right?" is a question we get very often.

While it is true that mass production in factories often means - well, exactly that - production in mass quantities; there are also scenarios where MOQs (Minimum Order Quantity) can be low, depending on other factors like project value and complexity of the production.

Have a look at these Giant Inflatable Waving Men for example.

Guinness Stout was preparing for Saint Patrick's Day and wished to develop a special highlight for an upcoming event. They had an idea to develop some 3-meter tall inflatable men with one hand holding a pint of Guinness and the other constantly waving, welcoming the guests at the event. They needed just 30 inflatables, and with Rent-A-Team we were able to have them developed here in China.

This product did require quite a bit of R&D as the waving motion required a very delicate balance between the airflow and the size and shape of the air-outlet at the tip of the inflatable's hand. It also required very stringent quality control to ensure that every component of the Waving Men worked.

Eventually, Saint Patrick's Day came and the 30 Waving Men stood tall amongst the happy crowd! Everyone with a pint of Guinness in their hands! The Waving Men added an interesting “moving element” to the festival which drew lots of attention, while prominently branding the venue with Guinness.

This afternoon, the loading inspections for an order of leather folders were completed and will be making their way to Singapore! Soon, these leather folders will fulfil their destiny of presenting car manuals to brand-new car owners of a prestigious brand!

A project where Rent-A-Team helped a client with the full procurement, quality inspection, and delivery from China to their doorstep.
