Many customers are asking us why ocean freight has risen so much lately. Here we explain:
1. The Panama and Suez canals are marked in red for shipping companies and affect maritime freight. One blocked by Houthi attacks and the other is left without water. Although the rainy season is beginning, congestion is still great.
2. Large Chinese companies such as BYD, Hisense and Haier have been exporting in large volumes to Mexico and Brazil since April. This is the main point that increases maritime freight from China to Latin America. For example BYD are occupying 5000 teus every week, which takes up almost half of a large ship. And according to BYD news, they have a shipping plan until the end of June.
3. Many shipping companies are leaving itineraries blank with the intention of being able to increase maritime freight. That is, shipping companies cancel ships so that there is less supply of space in the market.
Based on this, we believe that it is very possible that maritime freight will continue to rise or remain high until July. And we recommend customers to send their goods as soon as possible.
