Pinglu Canal Officially Opens to Navigation
The Pinglu Canal officially opened to navigation on September 16, 2026, establishing a direct inland waterway connection between the Xijiang River system and the Beibu Gulf.

Stretching 134.2 kilometers from the Pingtang River estuary to the Beibu Gulf via the Qinjiang River, the canal began construction in August 2022. Built to Class I inland waterway standards, it can accommodate vessels of up to 5,000 tonnes.

The Pinglu Canal is the first river-to-sea canal project planned and constructed at the national level since the founding of the People’s Republic of China and is a backbone project of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor.

A major engineering feature is its water-saving lock system. The Madao Hub has a maximum elevation difference of 29.6 meters, while its lock chamber measures 300 meters long and 34 meters wide. The project employs an innovative three-stage water-saving lock system capable of saving more than 60% of water consumption.

The canal fundamentally shortens Southwest China’s access to the sea. Cargo transported through the canal can reduce the inland waterway distance to the coast by more than 560 kilometers, with logistics costs expected to fall by 18%–30% and annual social transportation costs potentially reduced by approximately RMB 5.2 billion.

By connecting with the China-Laos Railway, China-Europe Railway Express and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, the Pinglu Canal will strengthen rail-river-sea multimodal transport links and provide Southwest China with more direct access to ASEAN and global markets.

The canal is also expected to facilitate two-way trade between China and ASEAN, including exports of automotive components, construction machinery parts and aluminum products, as well as imports of rubber, palm oil and fruit.

Its opening represents a major milestone in China’s inland waterway development and is expected to strengthen the integration of regional supply chains between Southwest China, the Beibu Gulf and ASEAN.

Beibu Gulf Port Begins Construction of Five New Automated Berths
Beibu Gulf Port Group has begun construction of five new 5,000-tonne automated container berths at the Dalanping South Operation Area of Qinzhou Port.

With a total investment of approximately RMB 941 million, the project will have a combined shoreline length of 695 meters and an annual designed handling capacity of 650,000 TEUs.

The project includes a 144,000-square-meter automated container yard, five automated quay cranes, six automated rail-mounted gantry cranes and 30 intelligent guided vehicles (IGVs).

Once completed, the five berths will operate together with existing Berths 7–10 at Qinzhou Automated Container Terminal, strengthening the port’s integrated river-sea-rail multimodal transport system.

As a key interface between the Pinglu Canal and the sea, the Dalanping South Operation Area is expected to handle growing cargo volumes following the canal’s opening and further strengthen Qinzhou Port’s role in the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor.

China Completes First Ammonia Bunkering Operation for Ammonia-Fueled Merchant Vessel
China Marine Bunker (PetroChina) Co., Ltd. (CHIMBUSCO) has successfully completed China’s first liquid ammonia bunkering operation for an ammonia-fueled merchant vessel, marking a major step in the country’s application of zero-carbon marine fuels.

Given ammonia’s toxicity, volatility and handling requirements, the operation involved 12 critical procedures, including hazardous-material road transportation, ship-shore interface coordination, fuel transfer and gas-liquid balancing.

With no mature domestic operating standard previously available, CHIMBUSCO completed the operation following 210 days of technical development and preparation.

CHIMBUSCO has already established bunkering capabilities covering LNG, green methanol and other clean marine fuels. The addition of liquid ammonia further expands its alternative-fuel bunkering portfolio and supports the future commercial operation of ammonia-powered vessels.

World First: Sea Legend LNG-Powered Containership Sets Sail on Arctic Route
On September 15, Sea Legend Line’s TIGER MAANSHAN departed Ningbo-Zhoushan Port fully loaded to join the China-Europe Arctic Express (CAX) service.

The ice-strengthened LNG-powered containership will operate on a route connecting Nansha, Taicang, Ningbo, Felixstowe, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Gdynia and Oulu, with a transit time of approximately 20 days.

According to Sea Legend, this marks the first Arctic passage by a clean-energy-powered containership. The vessel is carrying mainly high-value Chinese exports, including energy storage equipment, PCS components, power batteries and new energy vehicles.

Powered by LNG, TIGER MAANSHAN is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by around 30%, eliminate sulfur emissions, cut NOx emissions by approximately 85%, and reduce particulate matter and black carbon emissions by more than 95% compared with conventional HFO.

Sea Legend said three LNG-powered vessels — TIGER MAANSHAN, TIGER LIANYUNGANG and TIGER BINTULU — are expected to operate the CAX service this year, supporting regular green logistics links between China and Europe.

Yiwu Launches First Domestic Trade Freight Train
Yiwu’s first dedicated domestic trade freight train has commenced operations, establishing a new logistics model combining import-export and domestic cargo flows.

On September 8, a train carrying processed lithium mineral products departed Yiwu West Railway Station and arrived at Qinzhou East Railway Station in Guangxi.

The service was launched after typhoons and other extreme weather disrupted coastal shipping services, interrupting the transportation of key raw materials and putting production at affected companies at risk.

The Ningbo-Zhoushan Port sea-rail intermodal team developed an emergency logistics solution, consolidating the stranded cargo at Yiwu West and coordinating railway capacity for a direct train to Qinzhou.

After arriving at Qinzhou East, the cargo was transferred to trucks for final delivery, creating a “rail + road” end-to-end transport chain.

The new service demonstrates Ningbo-Zhoushan Port’s efforts to expand its inland “Sixth Port Area” network while providing manufacturers with a more resilient alternative for emergency logistics and domestic transportation.

Official Nautical Chart for Pinglu Canal Estuary Released
China has officially published the first dedicated nautical chart for the seaward entrance of the Pinglu Canal.

The chart, titled “Pinglu Canal Estuary” and numbered 92108, was compiled by the Shanghai Chart Center under the East China Sea Navigation Support Center and published by the Maritime Safety Administration of China on September 7.

It covers the 22-kilometer newly built coastal navigation channel of the Pinglu Canal, extending from the Qinjiang Bridge on the G75 Lanzhou–Haikou Expressway to the waters connecting Longmen Bridge and Qinzhou Port.

At the same time, installation of navigation aids along the canal’s coastal entrance section has been completed, with 127 aids to navigation now in place.

The new chart connects with existing standardized charts for Qinzhou Port, completing the navigational chart coverage of the area and providing additional safety support ahead of the canal’s planned opening.
