The surveyor doesn't get in the water.

That's the part most owners don't think about when they book
an in-water survey. Class sends someone to witness and sign
off, but the readings come from whoever you hired to take
them — and the surveyor has to be willing to accept how
they were taken.

Which is why the method matters as much as the result. Live
video the surveyor can watch, comms open to the diver, a
written log filled in as each figure comes through. Get that
wrong and the measurements are just numbers on a page.

Different societies, different criteria, same requirement:
the work has to be witnessed in a way they'll stand behind.

Save this before booking your next survey.

Nobody drydocks a ship to measure a gap.

The rudder stock turns inside a neck bearing, and the gap
between the bush and the liner grows as the bearing wears.
Left unchecked, the play works its way into the steering
gear — and by then it isn't a bearing job anymore.

There's a threaded plug on each side of the rudder for
exactly this. Open it, insert the gauge, read the clearance,
close it again. Port and starboard, and the two figures
are added together.

Same vessel, same week as the hull survey we posted a few
days ago. The diver is the one underwater. The measurement
still ends up on paper.

Save this if your next class survey is coming up.

Happy September 18! 🇨🇱🎉 While Chile celebrates, here's how we're running these days.

We take September 18 and 19 off along with the rest of the country, but we know vessels don't always wait for the calendar. If your operation needs attention on these dates, we'll coordinate based on shifts and arrival time.

Enjoy the holiday with your loved ones. We'll still be on standby in case the sea calls.

The surveyor never got wet.

Classification societies accept an in-water survey in place
of drydocking under defined conditions — but only if the
inspection can be witnessed and evidenced as it happens.

That's what the equipment on deck is for. Live video, two
open comms channels, air supplied and monitored by hand
from the surface, and a written log filled in as each
reading comes through.

The diver is underwater. The evidence is not.

What's the longest you've had a vessel out of service
waiting on a drydock slot?

Most clients nod. Almost none ask.

Technical vocabulary does something quietly unfair in this
industry: it turns a conversation between equals into one
where only one side knows what's being agreed to.

We'd rather explain the terms than have someone approve a
scope they don't fully understand — including the parts where
the honest answer is that a service isn't necessary yet.

Which of these has someone asked you to sign without
explaining it?

Casi nadie pregunta.

Drydocking wasn't an option on this one.

A bow thruster is what lets a vessel push her own bow sideways
and come alongside without tugs. When it fails, every berthing
manoeuvre gets slower, costlier, and dependent on someone
else's schedule.

The entire job was done inside the ship's engine room. Not in
a workshop, not on a bench — in the space that existed, around
a 5-ton motor that had to be turned on its side before a single
bearing could come out.

To everyone working at sea: what's the tightest space you've
ever had to work in?

These are the questions we get most before hiring an inspection.

Frequencies, what happens if something expires at sea, whether inspections can happen without stopping operations, port coverage: the real questions from people who've already worked with us or are about to.

Got a question that's not on the list? Drop it in the comments.

These cranes do a lot more than a cruise passenger might imagine. ⚓🛳️

One loads all the ship's provisions when it docks: every pallet that stocks the voyage. Others lower the boats into the water for excursions to places like Antarctica. Both play a critical role, and both need real inspection.

Every hoisting system on board gets checked: mechanism, cables, and load capacity.

These aren't exaggerated scenarios. They're what can actually happen when an inspection gets postponed. ⚠️

A boat failing under its own weight, an extinguisher that doesn't respond, a mooring line giving way mid-maneuver: every one of these is preventable. The difference between a scare and a tragedy is usually one timely inspection.

At CSM, we work to keep these scenarios purely theoretical.

These are our own cylinders. And they go through the same standard we apply to our clients' equipment. 🔩

Hydrostatic test: controlled pressure to verify they truly hold up, no leaks, no deformation. That's the only way they get approved, painted, and put back into service.

If we hold our own equipment to this standard, that's how we work with yours.
