Camino de Santiago packing😬

If you think this is pure chaos, you are wrong. 😝

One day I might do a proper reel on how to pack and what to pack (what I pack at least).

But for now, you just have to trust me that I know what I’m doing here. 😅

And I’ll tell you more about the bunny another time. 🤭

SURPRISE

I’ll be walking not one, but two Caminos. 🥰

SAN SALVADOR from León to Oviedo
PRIMITIVO from Oviedo to Santiago

I’m starting my walk on Monday, hoping to arrive in Santiago for the 9th time, but we’ll see if I manage to walk all the way this time.

I’ll try to share this journey here as I go, but no promises😅. I want to enjoy this Camino and take some time off from day-to-day life, too.

If you’re dreaming about your first Camino, follow along. You might find some useful tips and insights for your own journey.

What would you like me to show you on these two Camino routes?

I AM GOING ON ANOTHER CAMINO🥳

We never know how long our bodies will allow us to do the things we love.

So why keep waiting for someday?

And that's one of the reasons I'm going on another Camino.

Starting on Monday🥰.

Can you guess which one? 😬

Planning your first Camino de Santiago?

Am I fit enough?

My short answer in most cases is: YES, why not?

I actually wouldn't consider myself a very fit person, and I’ve still walked thousands of
kilometers on Camino routes over 10 years.

And what does “fit enough” even mean? It’s different for everyone. Your route, daily distance, preparation, backpack weight and mindset all play a role.

There is almost always a way to make a Camino work for you, and I’ve got your back.

If you’re wondering whether you’re ready for your first Camino, feel free to reach out to me and we can have a chat.

Planning your first Camino de Santiago?

Which route should I take?

Choosing your Camino route is a big decision, and there are quite a few things to consider. Just to name a few:

-fitness level
-time/budget limitations
-personal preferences

The “right” Camino is not the same for everyone and I will happily help you find the route that fits you and your individual needs.

BUT:

It is not always about making a rational decision. You might find that one route looks like the perfect match for you on paper, but for some reason, you feel drawn to another one.

My advice? Follow your gut.

We’ll figure out how to make that Camino work for you, too. Even if it wasn’t the obvious choice on paper.

If your head is spinning over which Camino to Santiago you should take, send me a message and I’ll give you some guidance to get you started.

Planning your first Camino de Santiago?

Ask yourself these questions first:

When and how long can I go on my Camino? Why do I want to go on this journey? Am I going by
myself? And how much money can I spend on this experience?

These are some of the questions I will also go through with you before we start planning your individual Camino. I want and need to get to know you, so I can understand how I can support you best.

We usually manage to go through these initial questions during the free first consultation I offer.

At the end of this first call, you will know if I am the right person to support you on your Camino, and I will have a clear idea of where I can support you best. And if I’m not the best fit for the kind of Camino you have in mind, I’ll tell you and recommend another solution that might be a better fit for you.

What are you waiting for?

Day 6 hiking the Via Jacobi / Schwabenweg

Rapperswil to Einsiedeln: 18 km

And that’s a wrap. 90+ km from Konstanz to Einsiedeln in six days. Despite the heat, it was a great experience and quite an adventure to share with my mom.

We tried to keep this Camino as flexible as possible. The heatwave changed our plans a
little: we walked shorter stages, took lots of breaks and often decided what to do next only when we got there. We also didn’t book most of our accommodation in advance.

Somehow, it worked out just perfectly for us, also thanks to all the helpful locals we met along the way. They gave us a bed, helped when we were running out of water on these hot days, or stopped to say hi and recommend an alternative route.

This Camino experience was quite different from the Caminos I have walked in Spain, France and Portugal so far. Not better or worse, just different. I think mainly because it was so quiet.

And what started as one week of hiking together has already turned into a bigger idea. My mom and I are thinking about continuing the Via Jacobi next year, restarting our Camino here in Einsiedeln.

Maybe it will be all in the rain next time, who knows. 😅

So I guess this wasn’t really the end of our Camino after all. Would you like to join us for the next section in 2027?

Day 5 hiking the Via Jacobi / Schwabenweg

Fischenthal to Rapperswil: 20 km

Our Camino is slowly coming to an end. Tomorrow we will arrive in Einsiedeln, where we will end our Camino for this trip.

But today we had a wonderful hiking day ahead of us. Our feet felt good, so we didn’t mind adding some elevation and a few extra km when a local recommended an alternative route. Even though we did get lost at some point. 😂

This Camino has been super quiet. In total, we only met 3 other pilgrims walking this stretch, and I was happy I wasn’t alone on this Camino, but in good company with my mom.

On the more popular routes, like the Camino Francés or Camino Portugués, you will meet plenty of other pilgrims along the way.

What do you prefer? A quiet Camino and walking in solitude, or a busier Camino with lots of other pilgrims to share stories and dinner with?

Day 4 hiking on the Via Jacobi / Schwabenweg

Fischingen to Fischenthal: 13.5 km

The hike was beautiful today. Not so many towns anymore, but much more nature and hills, as we also had some more up- and downhill hiking.

If you’re used to the more popular Camino routes in Spain or Portugal, you might be surprised by how different things can be on a quieter route like the Schwabenweg in Switzerland.

There are accommodations, but they can be limited. So as a pilgrim passing through this
area, you have to be a little more flexible and it’s a good idea to carry some extra cash if you’re staying in private houses where you can’t pay by card.

Only 2 more days left until we reach Einsiedeln.

Day 3 on the Schwabenweg

Tobel to Fischingen: 16 km

Fischingen was definitely one of my favorite
stops on this section of the Via Jacobi.

We loved being able to stay in the monastery as pilgrims, and the brewery with its cold b**r was definitely a big plus on a hot day like this. You need to stay hydrated, they say. 😂

The atmosphere around the old monastery and chatting with other pilgrims also made us feel much more like we were actually on a pilgrimage, rather than just on a regular hike.
