We extend our thanks to the Whitehorse Cadets for inviting us to participate in last week's Career Expo.

Community Airport Manager Alex Bourgeois shared a behind-the-scenes look at aviation in the Yukon, highlighting the many career pathways in the sector and reminding cadets that aviation isn’t just about pilots. It takes a whole team of experts to keep the Yukon moving.

Keeping the Yukon connected starts with safe and reliable infrastructure.

We're pleased to see more than $2 million in federal funding announced for a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicle at Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport.

Replacing the airport's 20-year-old vehicle will give emergency responders the modern equipment they need to help keep the airport operations safe for Yukoners, visitors and businesses.

We appreciate the Government of Canada's continued partnership in supporting transportation infrastructure that helps connect communities across the territory and keep people and goods moving safely.

Meet Thor Guard – YXY's very own lightning-prediction superhero! No cape, no hammer, just the power to detect lightning risk before it strikes. ⚡

Thor Guard monitors atmospheric static buildup within 6 kilometres of the airport and provides an early warning of potential lightning activity. When conditions become unsafe, airport operations staff activate safety procedures and clear the apron.

🔴 When a Red Alert is triggered:
- outdoor operations pause;
- fueling stops immediately;
- boarding or deplaning on the open apron is suspended; and,
- everyone on the apron clears the area and moves indoors or onboard until the alert ends.

Once conditions return to normal, Thor Guard sounds three 5-second horn blasts and the red-amber light switches off.

So, if you hear a horn and see flashing amber lights at YXY, that’s just Thor Guard doing its job!

It’s about to get busier at the airport this weekend and the parking lot can reach its capacity very quickly.

🚕 Get dropped off, take a taxi or hop on a bus if you can.

⌚ Arrive early – give yourself extra time for parking, check-in and security.

📱 Picking someone up? Wait in the cell phone lot located behind the Transportation Museum until they’re ready to go.

Friendly reminder that the airport access lane is for immediate pick-up and drop-off only. No unattended vehicles, please! Safe travels ✈️

Whitehorse Airport update: Saturday, April 18, 7:10 am

A China Airlines Cargo aircraft diverted to YXY earlier this morning due to a smoke indication onboard. The aircraft landed safely and all crew are safe, with no injuries or fire reported.

Emergency crews are on scene and departures are continuing with minimal delays. No further updates are expected at this time.

🚨 Heads up, Whitehorse! You may hear occasional sounds from YXY starting today and over the spring and summer.

With increased bird activity near the runway this time of year, the airport team will begin using their noise cannons to gently discourage birds from the areas. This is an important step to help reduce the risk of bird strikes and keep flights operating safely.

We understand that the noise can be disruptive, which is why we’ve taken steps this year to help minimize impacts. This includes relocating the cannons farther from residential areas.

You can expect brief bursts of sound (about three at a time) roughly every half hour during daylight hours.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we balance wildlife management with the safety of passengers, crews and airport staff.

Hey Whitehorse! If you heard some loud engines roaring overhead yesterday, don’t worry: it wasn’t the Artemis II landing and definitely not the start of an action movie.

A group of F‑35B jets made a quick stop at Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport (YXY) to refuel before heading back into the skies.

Thanks to everyone who shared photos and videos!
