Do you the know the highest elevated capital in the US? I’ll give you a hint, it’s not Denver, Colorado. In fact, its almost 2,000 ft. higher than Denver.
A common misconception when I tell people I am from New Mexico, is that it is hot, and most of the time compared to Toronto, Ontario it is “hotter”. Few believe me when I tell them that winters and springs bring snow capped vistas. I laugh because I know that Santa Fe sits at 7,200 ft. the highest US state capital in the country!
The juxtaposition of the high desert is remarkable. Most people think of deserts as vast and flat, which they are, but what they don’t realize is the variety in the landscape never ending canyons, valleys, mesas, buttes, and incredibly high peaks! The hundreds of millions of years of erosion, wind and water inflicts on our old and steadfast desert is what makes it so captivating. It is why when you look off in the distance you can see sharp and exaggerated changes in colour and texture. It is why artists, geologist and outdoor enthusiasts all come to experience it.
