Art can express so much don’t you agree? Our good friend Sharlena Wood Art inspires us so much, when she takes everyday natural beauty and makes it a focused, emotional, and dramatic show of colour, shapes, and beauty.
The best artists see not only what is right in front of them, but they see even more. New perspectives, a colour story, shapes, and shadows that are connected and intertwined.
This is why we chose Sharlena to teach our upcoming retreat, Georgia’s Muse a mixed media art retreat that focuses on the life and work of Georgia O’Keeffe. We thought who more kin to Georgia than Sharlena, who else could see the landscape and nature through Georgia’s eyes. Who else can help us see beyond what is right in front of us?

“Deer's Skull with Pedernal” accurately depicts the big blue skies of New Mexico that you don’t want to miss seeing during Georgia’s Muse this September!

You’ll notice in this painting that the skull hangs on a weathered pinõn tree. Have you ever had roasted pinõn?

Fun Fact: On the back of this canvas was a star, which was a personal code that O’Keefe used when she was pleased with the way a work had turned out. Painted in 1936, it has now been donated to the collection.

Native Americans of the Southwest create many varieties of stunningly beautiful art. They carry on artistic traditions by passing them on generationally, the skills they use and the items they make are functional and often tied to celebrations and ceremony. Their art often contains symbols and signs of their beliefs, dreams, and visions. Honoring their ancestors in everything they do is also extremely important, as is their reverence for nature. How does your art tie you to your values and history?

Did you know that broccoli contains more protein per calorie than steak and, per calorie, spinach is about equal to chicken and fish? Though this would require eating 8 servings of broccoli to consume 20g of protein, which is quite a lot! The only thing more gratifying than a trip to the market for fresh produce is preparing them into a wholesome meal. Combining the variety of colours and textures into beautifully prepared meals for our retreat guests is something we always enjoy. A few of our favourite chefs which we take inspiration from are .

Which do you think is more striking in this Georgia O’Keeffe painting, Black Mesa Landscape? Is it the stark juxtaposition in the colours similar to our High Desert photo from yesterday? Or is it the variation in light? Personally for me it’s the colour palette. It is so true to the New Mexico landscape, but in a rare intimate perspective. One that you can only have if you staring at this red rock right at twilight. O’Keeffe was obsessed with this colour palette. You can learn more about her use of it at our Georgia’s Muse Mixed Media Art Retreat in Abiquiu, NM in early September.

Who wants to come get lost and found in the desert? It’s impossible not to love and identify with the works and spirit of Georgia O'Keeffe. She had the courage to forge a completely new path, and it transformed her into one of the most iconic American artists of all time. In 1929 O’Keeffe traveled to Taos, New Mexico to visit her friend Mabel Dodge Luhan, arts supporter-writer. It was then she first heard of Ghost Ranch and caught her first glimpses of it. She would later move there in 1949, where she created some of her most famous works. Join us to celebrate 90 year since O’Keeffe’s first visit to the Land of Enchantment. Explore her work and connect with the landscape and nature that so inspired her www.desertlandscapesretreats.com!

Do you the know the highest elevated capital in the US? I’ll give you a hint, it’s not Denver, Colorado. In fact, its almost 2,000 ft. higher than Denver.
A common misconception when I tell people I am from New Mexico, is that it is hot, and most of the time compared to Toronto, Ontario it is “hotter”. Few believe me when I tell them that winters and springs bring snow capped vistas. I laugh because I know that Santa Fe sits at 7,200 ft. the highest US state capital in the country!
The juxtaposition of the high desert is remarkable. Most people think of deserts as vast and flat, which they are, but what they don’t realize is the variety in the landscape never ending canyons, valleys, mesas, buttes, and incredibly high peaks! The hundreds of millions of years of erosion, wind and water inflicts on our old and steadfast desert is what makes it so captivating. It is why when you look off in the distance you can see sharp and exaggerated changes in colour and texture. It is why artists, geologist and outdoor enthusiasts all come to experience it.
