It started over 20 years ago when my wife and I were standing on a beautiful beach on an Island near Killbear Park on Georgian Bay. The July day was perfect except for the persistent attacks of the deer and horse flies. We were at the point when you have had enough swinging your arms in the air trying to fend them off when a fleet of dragonflies came in from nowhere and started decimating the flies. The horse and Deer flies made themselves scarce in a hurry. At that time, I told my wife we should make up fake dragonflies and see if we could imitate a real one and wear it to scare of the flies. I later learned more about horse and deer flies and found out that they are primarily visual hunters. Being visual hunters they can also see there most feared predator the dragonfly. A few years back in the early spring my wife found me an ornamental dragonfly that I mounted to a wire and attached to a hat. I couldn’t wait to try it out. Finally, June rolled around and the bugs where back. There is an area on our cottage road where the deer flies are unbearable, we drove there in our truck and the flies were swarming. She stopped and let me out unprotected and my arm waving started immediately they were unbearable. She then passed me my prototype hat out the window and within 30 seconds of it being on my head they were gone! A few years went by as we continued testing to get the Wingman as close to perfect as possible by trying different colours, length of wire and other variables to imitate a real one.
