Way, way too close for comfort!

Back in mid-may the grizzlies in Yellowstone were still down in the lower valleys. On our return to the campground after an incredible day in the Lamar Valley, we saw a bunch of people peering over a bluff right next to a vista parking lot.
I grabbed my long lens and snapped a handlful of shots of this beauty.
After about 2 minutes of shooting, the bear had got within about 30 yards of the spot where we were. I came to my senses and got back to the car! Thirty yards means nothing if that bear decided he had enough off us.

The Serengeti of North America - Lamar Valley
The nickname is well deserved. Imagine a zoo with no enclosures or walls. The Lamar Valley in the northeast corner of Yellowstone felt just like this. A ranger told us that the female bison head here in the spring to raise their young. On our day drive through the vallew we saw hundreds of bison, as well as elk, grizzly, pronghorn, moose and more.
Beyond all the beautiful natural geologic wonders of the park, the Lamar Valley stood out as one of the most memorable moments of our two-week stay.

We loved coming across this warning sign at all the springs and pools around the park! Only problem is --- I'm not convinced that mom didn't actually push the little brat in on purpose!!

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Warning! These are really bad photos of a really beautiful place. We were caught unprepared when it began downpouring, the weather dropped and we were shivering in light, wet clothes.
The waterfall views are spectacular and the canyon is impressive from all sides. I can't wait to get back - prepared - to experience this part of Yellowstone again.

Grizzly at Yellowstone Lake -
If you want to see the wildlife.... look for the humans.
We learned that in early spring, the park is filled with professional photographers and guides, all trying to make their annual income inside a few weeks, when the bears awaken from hibernation and are still down on the valley floors. The photog/guides run a network of calling and texting sightings. We came across this scene numerous times, where 20 or so photographers were camped out with insanely powerful lenses, shooting the bears who were out and about.
On our first day drive, we sighted this grizzly. It wasn't too hard as there were likely 30 cars and 60+ people hanging around.
