A lot happens between the decision and the truck.

Making the decision to move is one thing. Getting to moving day? That's another story.

There are belongings to sort through. Decisions about what stays and what goes. Things to donate, furniture to find new homes for, boxes to pack and countless little details to coordinate.

And when it's a home someone has lived in for decades, those decisions aren't always easy.

Sometimes there's excitement about what's next. Sometimes there's sadness about what's being left behind. And often, there's a little of both.

By the time the moving truck pulls into the driveway, an enormous amount of work may have already happened.

And that's the part we wish more people knew they didn't have to manage on their own.

Because getting from the decision to moving day shouldn't have to mean putting the rest of your life on hold. 🤍

Birthday girl duties today included packing, sorting, moving… and being firmly told that "no, the giant teddy bear could not come with us unless we rented another truck." 😂🧸

Lucky for me, I get to spend her birthday working alongside a pretty great business partner and an even better friend. Not exactly a day off, but we’ll make sure she’s celebrated accordingly later! 😂🥳🤍

Some moves aren’t planned.

Sometimes there’s time to think about moving. To make plans. Sort through belongings. Decide what comes next.

And sometimes life makes that decision for you.

We recently had the privilege of helping someone whose life changed very unexpectedly several years ago.

Her home had been waiting for her ever since.

For years, it remained much as she had left it while she focused on getting stronger and held onto the hope that she might one day be able to return.

Eventually came the very difficult realization that life had changed - and home, as she had known it, wasn’t going to be part of the next chapter.

This wasn’t someone who was excited to downsize. She wasn’t ready for a fresh start or looking forward to a move.

She loved her home. She didn’t want to leave it.

And we think that’s important to acknowledge.

Not every move is exciting. Not every transition feels like a new beginning. Sometimes there is real grief in letting go of a home, belongings, routines and a life you expected to return to.

In those moments, our job isn’t to convince someone to be excited about what comes next.

It’s to meet them where they are.

To give them time. To listen. To work through things together. To help with the practical pieces when they’re ready - and to understand that sometimes deciding what happens to a mixing bowl, a favourite chair or something tucked away in a cupboard is about much more than the item itself.

Some moves aren’t planned. And sometimes, moving forward means letting go of a plan you weren’t ready to leave behind. 🤍

Living away from an aging parent can be hard.

You may notice things getting a little more difficult when you visit or talk on the phone, but being hours away means you can't simply pop over every time something needs to be done.

The good news is, not every kind of help requires you to be there in person.

There are plenty of things adult children can help coordinate from a distance - appointments, deliveries, home services, transportation, paperwork and even finding trusted local support when something needs hands-on help.

Sometimes taking one or two things off the list can make life easier for everyone.

And when something does require someone nearby, that's where having a trusted local network can make all the difference. 🤍

September has a way of making us want to get our lives back in order.

The kids are back to school. Vacations are winding down. Schedules are filling up again. And little by little, we’re settling back into our routines.

At the same time, another season is starting to change.

Which, at my house, currently looks a little like this. 😂

Patio furniture gets stacked. Cushions get packed away. Summer toys, life jackets, gardening supplies and all the other stuff that comes with summer has to find a home again.

And when it’s all sitting there in one place waiting to be put away, you realize just how much there is.

Before everything simply gets packed away for another year, September can be a really good time to ask:

What did we actually use this summer?
What never came out?
What are we keeping simply because we’ve always kept it?

You don’t have to tackle the whole garage, shed or basement at once. Sometimes one shelf, one cupboard or one corner is enough to get started.

Because getting organized isn’t always about finding a better place to put everything.

Sometimes it’s about having a little less to put away in the first place. 🤍

**Just a couple of girls kicking it back in the ’80s… with absolutely no idea what the next few decades had in store. 😂**

Back then, we certainly weren’t thinking about careers, raising six kids between us, or one day building a business together helping people through some of life’s biggest transitions.

Funny how life works.

We spend so much time thinking we know what the next chapter is going to look like - and then life has a way of changing the plan.

A new home.
Kids growing up.
Parents getting older.
Downsizing.
Starting over.
Moving on to something new.

Looking back, we had no idea where life would take us.

Maybe that’s part of why we understand that transitions aren’t just about moving from one home to another. They’re about everything that comes with moving from one chapter of life into the next. 🤍

**Life has a funny way of coming full circle… just maybe not the hair. 😂**
