Congratulations to Rob Rourke and the staff at Flooring Superstores Cranbrook today celebrating 30 years of local service in the East Kootenay. They are hosting a charity barbeque until 2pm today. Money raised supports Angel Flight East Kootenay. It was nice to meet the Bidstens who started this valuable local service.

So much fun at the 39th Annual Cranbrook Pro Rodeo Saturday Night. Fantastic crowd. Full house. Great performances. It was great to meet Rodeo Announcing legend Wes Cummings pictured here with me. Also pictured here is Taylor Manning from Ponoka, Alberta. She is currently the leader on the Canadian Pro Rodeo Circuit for Barrel Racing. Thank you to all the amazing sponsors and volunteers.

A busy family weekend with a wonderful day at the The Calgary Zoo. It is wonderful to have so many tourist treasures close to the East Kootenay. A tip for family with littles. If you forget the stroller you can rent little wagons to help with tired feet. While the family enjoyed the Lions and Tigers and Giraffes there are sadly no more elephants at Calgary Zoo. But still a great place.

I enjoyed the day at Calaway Park with my husband, daughter and son-in-law and grandchildren. Calaway Park has 32 rides for all ages and is Western Canada's largest family amusement park. Definitely a 10/10.

Excellent location for all your Calgary adventures. Close to the The Calgary Zoo. And they have amazing staff.

Great news for our friends in City of Kimberley.

NEWS RELEASE: Evacuation Alert Lifted for City of Kimberley (Posted 07.25.26 2:00 PM)

The Evacuation Alert for all properties within the City of Kimberley municipal boundary has been rescinded as the BC Wildfire Service makes progress on the Matthew Creek Wildfire.

“Given the progress crews have made, forecasted fire behaviour and available resources, the BC Wildfire Service has made the recommendation that the Evacuation Alert for the City of Kimberley can be lifted,” says City of Kimberley Fire Chief Will Booth. ”While the Alert has been rescinded, it is important for residents to understand the fire remains active and BC Wildfire Service crews will continue with their fire suppression efforts. We can expect to see resources working in and around the fire and we all need to remain aware as conditions can change.”

The Evacuation Alert for 66 properties in the St. Mary Lake area in relation to the Tower Creek Fires remains in effect.

“There have been no changes in the status of the Evacuation Alert for the St. Mary Lake area and we continue to urge residents to remain vigilant. Have plans in place and a go-bag packed in the event conditions change and an Evacuation Order needs to be issued,” stresses Information Officer Loree Duczek.

A copy of the Matthew Creek Alert Rescind can be found on www.kimberley.ca, while the Evacuation Alert for the Tower Creek Fires in the St. Mary Lake area can be found on www.rdek.bc.ca. The latest information on the fires is available on www.bcwildfire.ca.

Registration links for the Regional Evacuation Notification System, Vulnerable Persons Database and a host of other preparedness information and resources can also be found on the RDEK’s website. “People have been doing a fantastic job in signing up for the Notification System and for anyone who has not done so yet, please get signed up,” says Regional Information Officer, Loree Duczek. Those without computer access, or who would like an additional hand signing up or verifying their pinned locations, can call the Regional Emergency Information Line at 250-426-2188 or 1-855-346-2188.

For all of our friends who live or have homes in the East Kootenay. A reminder from the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK)!
Be safe and thank you firefighters.

A reminder from the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK)! No matter where you live in the East Kootenay, please register for the Evacuation Notification System. Register at www.rdek.bc.ca/ens to be alerted in the event of an evacuation order or alert. You can sign up to be alerted on a landline, cellphone or by text. Or, sign up for the Voyent Alert! app. If you are already registered, please login to confirm that the pins are on your exact location as we have found that many people have not placed their pin directly on their intended property and risk missing out on critical alerts or being alerted incorrectly. This service is available to all East Kootenay residents, property owners, and even visitors — including rural RDEK, municipalities, and First Nations. For broader emergency information, follow the RDEK on social media, monitor local media, follow your local municipal channels, or sign up for an RDEK email group at www.rdek.bc.ca/emailgroup
