My first fat bike ride, ever! I can’t believe I’ve let this take so long to happen but it’s admittedly hard to balance all of the awesome the winter has to offer, like downhill and xc skiing. Done and dusted and it was fabulous!

I rented a Trek Farley 5 from in Bragg and the whole process was so simple: booked online, printed some paperwork, picked it up including getting the seat sizes for me, bike worked like it was brand new, studded (and wide!) tires were AWEsome, shifted & braked great, grippy pedals, and it was a stellar ride! I brought my own pogies (which was nice). Highly recommend!

We’ve found a great new-to-us, pretty kid-friendly loop at West Bragg and it got an unsolicited thumbs up from this 8 yo 🙌 8.8 km of singletrack: West Crystal Line to Snowy Shortcut then Snowy Owl the whole way to Strange Brew (you could exit down via Ranger for a shorter loop), finishing on lower Boundary 👍 Lots of this is not polished/buff trail as it’s built for winter use BUT because it’s been so freaking dry this year, it was good to go. And, if/when it gets buffed out and some more drainage work for wetter years, it will be such a great green/easy blue xc-style riding trail. No crazy climbs, some climbing but generally follows the contours so super kid-friendly in that regard. It’s just a bit bumpier than a more high-use trail (but even recent trail work has made sections on either side of Ranger better already).

Today was NBD for me 🥳 And yes, it’s technically still a cargo bike BUT, it’s also right sized as a me-city bike: I can haul my teaching gear, e-assist to keep off the sweat and shave off some time, & it’s all about the size of a ‘regular’ bike, albeit heavy at about 55 lbs including battery. My new commute will be about 45 km round trip for the remainder of the school year. I hope I can work up to doing it every day but might start with 3 days/week so I don’t hurt my old body haha, on vera!

Thanks to the helpful folks at !

Bike friends! I’m enjoying listening to audiobooks on my 1 hr+ of driving 5 days/week, and the views are mostly gorgeous on the way there, but… I think I’m ready for a longer but more active commute. I’m having a hard time fitting in activity outside of work and it’s wearing thin, so while biking at least one way will add more time at least I will get the movement for my body/soul.

Looking at getting a folding bike so can multimodal with the train on the way there, then bike all (or most) of the way home.

Or, thinking of getting an e-bike and just doing the round trip because the multimodal is time consuming (but a bit faster than an acoustic bike, at least on the way there due to hills).

Brompton M6R? Tern HSD? Other ideas?

I don’t know how long I’ll be at this school for and feel comfortable locking up an e-bike there, but if I go back to subbing I would worry about bike parking security. So a Brompton would make more sense then, but the e-bike option is so great for the distance and sweat factors. I guess an e-Brompton could be an option but I’m not entirely convinced… seems heavy and you lose storage to the battery which I couldn’t live without if I was on contract ie not subbing…

Would love to hear all your bike nerd thoughts ❤️

Commute Advice: 🧵

Option A: 🚘 (about 30 mins each way, sometimes more like 45 on way home, upwards >1 hr if bad weather)

Option B: 🚲-🚆-🚲 (about 5 mins - 40 mins - 10 mins) then 🚲 home (about 1h to 1h15…)

Option C: e-🚲 each way (timing unknown)

C=n+1
B=maybe n+1
