Alberta’s passenger rail plans continue to gain national attention.

📰 A new The Globe and Mail opinion piece examines the province’s renewed ambition for passenger rail and what it will take to turn that vision into a sustainable transportation system for residents and visitors.

🚅 The Calgary Airport–Banff Rail (CABR) project is an important part of that opportunity. It could offer residents and visitors a convenient alternative to driving, reduce congestion on busy roads, and ease pressure on our mountain parks.

It’s time the conversation shifts from whether passenger rail should return to Alberta to how we can make it happen.

Traffic is rising. So is transit use.

🚗 Nearly 900,000 vehicle movements were recorded at Banff’s two main entrances in July.

📈 That’s 4% more than the same time in 2025.

🚌 Roam Transit’s local routes carried more than 313,000 riders that month, up 20% from 2025 and 46% from 2024.

👍 That ridership is estimated to have replaced more than 126,000 private vehicle trips.

A new Rocky Mountain Outlook article looks at growing momentum for passenger rail in Alberta.

📰 The article highlights both the growing appetite for passenger rail and the need to address congestion as increasing visitor numbers put more pressure on the provincial roads.

💬 “We really do need a sustainable transportation solution in place,” Banff Mayor Corrie DiManno told the Outlook. “That said, it needs to come with disincentives to driving.”

Passenger rail, connected with Roam Public Transit and the Banff Eco-Transit Hub, could give residents and visitors a practical alternative to driving. The goal is not to bring more people to the Bow Valley, but to move them more efficiently, reduce pressure on roads, and create a more sustainable way to experience the mountain parks.

As Banff considers the future of sustainable transportation, another iconic mountain destination is asking similar questions.

🚠 A business in Queenstown, New Zealand, is seeking approval for a proposed aerial cable car connecting the airport, downtown, and surrounding communities. Queenstown has about 29,000 residents and recorded nearly two million bus trips last year.

The Bow Valley is home to a similar number of permanent residents, while Roam Public Transit welcomed more than three million riders in 2025.

💡 Different places, but the same challenge: moving more people through busy mountain destinations without relying on more private vehicles.

Around the world, mountain communities are exploring everything from passenger rail and transit, park-and-ride facilities, and aerial transit. Clearly its time for the conversation to shift toward moving more people, not more cars.

Banff remains as popular as ever. Vehicle traffic over the August long weekend surpassed last year’s already record levels, and July numbers suggest Banff is headed for its busiest year yet.

🚌 Meanwhile, more than 313,000 passengers used Roam Public Transit’s local Banff routes in July, a 20 per cent increase from last year.

People want to visit Banff and will choose alternatives to driving when those options are available. Better regional transit, intercept parking, and passenger rail can build on that momentum, helping more people reach Banff without adding more cars to its busy roads.

📈 The demand is there, and now we need the transportation options to meet it.

Driving into Banff, the signage is everywhere: PARK AND TAKE TRANSIT.

Many of these signs indicate that spots are available at the Train Station.

But in the summer, especially on long weekends, the Train Station lot is full by mid-morning.

🚘 Free intercept parking is a sustainable solution for Banff. It’s been working for seven years, and supported by partners like the Town of Banff, Parks Canada, and Banff & Lake Louise Tourism, who use signage to direct people to the Train Station’s free parking lot.

🤝 Private-public partnerships are essential. The parking lot is paid for and maintained by the Waterous family, leaseholders of the Train Station and the Banff Eco-Transit Hub.

The real win would be not needing to drive in the first place, not finding a place to park.

Let's not just fill parking lots. Let's reduce the number of cars coming to Banff.
