Our Annual std 5 trip came to a close with a bang! The children watched a 3D movie for the first time ever and took a tour of Riverwalk mall.

They returned safely to Malwelwe this evening. We miss them already!

Thank you to all of our volunteers! Be sure to catch us tomorrow at Maru-A-Pula at 9:30AM to buy some jewelry for our ReImagined campaign!

On Friday the 31st of March Operation Starfish visited the Botswana University of Agriculture to learn about theMorama which grows extensively in the Malwelwe area.
We meet Mr Mokoi, a Technician, who explained how the plant grows, and where. We were delighted to learn he is from Malwelwe!
Ms Makati, a horticulturalist then took us on a tour of the research greenhouse where they were growing the Morama in Malwelwe soil. The plant is like a vine, grows in dry climates and is perennial. It has a tuber underground which can reach the size of a small person!
Ms Matenanga, a research technician then explained to us her tests on the Morama for its nutritional value. The seeds have a lot of nutrients in them including 36% protein. It offers a great means to supplement diets and create greater food security in the poverty stricken Malwelwe Area.
The seeds can be pressed to make an oil. The left over material called an oil cake can be used to feed livestock.
We even tasted roasted Morama!
We then discussed how this research could be used to impact the community. We left inspired by the work being done, and with a newfound knowledge about this plant. We will be exploring ideas with the Malwelwe village this weekend when we visit on April 8th.
