According to international travel rules, pets should be microchipped before their rabies vaccination.

If the rabies vaccine is given before the microchip, it might not be considered valid for travel, which could prevent the animal from entering most countries. This can be one of the more common reasons pets are denied entry or travel permissions.

This is a question our clients ask regularly, and understanding the travel requirements early helps you stay focused and avoid last-minute issues.

For many routes, your pet’s journey is less of a quick vet visit and more of a mini project plan. In the correct order, you may need:

- Microchip in place
- Rabies vaccine (or booster)
- Sometimes a rabies blood test, with a waiting period
- An official health certificate within a very specific window before you fly

If you miss dates or steps are done in the wrong order, you risk delays, refusal to board or quarantine at the other end.

Our rule of thumb is simple. As soon as you know where you are going and roughly when, ask yourself:

“If we start this week, what is the earliest date my pet could legally travel?”
