🧭 What & Where

The main temple / monastery is Ramkot Banashram (also called Rangkut Banashram or Rangkut Monastery) in Ramu Upazila, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.

Ramu is a traditional Buddhist village ~16 km from Cox’s Bazar town.

📜 History & Significance

Ramkot Banashram is considered the oldest Buddhist monastery in Bangladesh.

It was (traditionally) established around 268 BCE, during Emperor Ashoka’s time.

“Rangkut” is a combo of “rang” (chest bone) + “kut” (hilltop) in Sanskrit/Rakhine, because there’s a belief the monastery houses a relic (a chest bone relic of Buddha).

👀 What You’ll See

A serene hillock area surrounded by many small hills (17 hills around) — gives a peaceful vibe.

The complex has statues — Buddha, Emperor Ashoka, Xuanzang, etc.

Also a huge reclining (lying down) Buddha statue ~ 100 feet long, called Vimukti Bibeshan Bhabna Kendra temple.

Traditional architecture, old woodcarvings, ornate “kyangs” (monasteries) & “vihara/vihars” around.

🛣️ How to Visit / Travel Tips

Since it's ~16 km from Cox's Bazar, you can use local transport or hire a car.

Best time: November to February — weather is more chill, less humidity. Avoid heavy rains.

Temple is active — people go for worship, meditation. So dress modestly, be respectful.
