The government has rules relating to EPIRBs, the use of, requirements on vessels, and the registration to the owners.
I have 2 simples rules for requirements to have one.
1. Do you go further across the water that what you can swim back (allowing for tide, weather and sea state).
2. How many days back at work after your emergency situation do you have to do to pay for a life saving device that costs $295, maybe 2 days?.
They are a life saving device and they work on land just as they do in the water, so if you get in to a life threatening situation out in The Australian Bush, they will save you there too.
Anaconda has them for $295 this week.
