🚰 Townsville City Council is reassuring residents that tap water remains safe for use despite temporary discolouration caused by an increase in naturally occurring minerals.

Recent rainfall and releases from the Ross River Dam have affected the raw water intake at the Douglas Water Treatment Plant, resulting in discolouration of treated water.

Residents may notice a yellow or brown tinge to their water, but current testing shows this has not impacted other aspects of water quality, including microbial safety.
Townsville’s water supply is continuously monitored to ensure it meets Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

Council understands it can be concerning to see discoloured water come out of your tap, however reassures residents this is a temporary, aesthetic issue linked to natural changes in the river system and is already improving following action taken by Trility and Council.

Council has already seen an improvement in water quality at the Douglas Water Treatment Plant, which is a promising sign that clarity is returning to normal.

The health and safety of our community is our highest priority, and that’s why Council regularly and thoroughly tests and treats our water supply to ensure it is safe for Townsville homes and businesses.

Council is continuing to work closely with the water supply regulator to ensure we are meeting all required water quality standards.

Water discolouration will gradually clear as households and businesses continue to use water as normal. It may take several days for all areas of the network to return to usual clarity.

Townsville’s drinking water undergoes rigorous testing multiple times each day, with results routinely reported to the water supply regulator.
