It was great to play some Napoleonic Black Powder. David and Spencer arrived at about 6:30 and we settled in with a coffee waiting for some other players. At 7:30 we decided to play a 1400 point game with my French vs Spencer’s Austrians and David’s Prussians.
The terrain was fairly open with gentle hills, light woods and a creek that was treated as an obstacle.
We raced through the first couple of turns as we cleared out some of the rules cobwebs. The French had a pretty good night with the dice and my columns advanced steadily towards the creek. David changed into line and advanced on the far left with his right held up by a wood. Spencer came forward in column and changed into line about 20” from the creek.
On my right I compressed almost a whole Division into a frontage facing just 2 of David’s brigades. In addition I had 3 * 6pdr guns with the columns firing as short range (under 16”). As we became fully engaged I started pushing columns forward into line. This increased my firepower and allowed me to step through shaken units so that they could be rallied.
On my left I forced the creek ready to advance on the Austrians. Spencer tried a cavalry charge that forced 2 of my units into square, but the French could not be stopped.
At 2200 we decided to play one more turn (turn 6). On my left I threw caution to the wind and charged into Spencer’s still fresh Austrians. I hit 2 Austrian units with a French column each with 2 support plus a cavalry unit supporting one. Spencer disordered both columns with defensive fire. The engagement that was supported by cavalry saw a French win with the Austrian unit falling back disordered. The other combat resulted in an Austrian win, but the French stayed in contact. Spencer then counter-attacked engaging 5 French units in melee..
On the Prussian flank, I was content to continue with a fire fight. I had already destroyed 2 units and the casualty markers were piling up.
Turn 6 saw some horrible dice rolled by me and David. I rolled 6 dice for combat and rolled 6 ones ☹ David rolled 3 shooting dice for 8 units and only inflicted 1 casualty.
At the end of turn 6 the Prussians had lost 3 units and were pretty well shot up. On the French left the Austrians and my second division both had multiple shaken units. The Austrian and Prussian general graciously deemed the battle a narrow French victory.
Thanks for the chance to put my French back on the table.
