How to see a convict barracks for free, and the cut-off that catches people out

Hyde Park Barracks sits at the top of Macquarie Street. Most people walk straight past it.

Convicts built it in 1819 and it is World Heritage listed.

The catch is a time, not a price.

It shuts at 6pm, but nobody is let in after 4.30pm.

Sessions start every half hour and the audio runs about 90 minutes.

Here is how to walk from the Spit Bridge to Manly through the bush, and catch the ferry home.

It is 10km, and there are Aboriginal rock engravings on the way.

1️⃣ Getting there
Catch the 144 bus from Chatswood Station towards Manly and get off at Battle Bvd at Manly Rd, the first stop after the Spit Bridge. On a Saturday morning it comes every 7 to 8 minutes. Chatswood is on the Metro, so you can start from the city.

2️⃣ The walk
It is called the Manly Scenic Walkway. National Parks puts it at 10km one way and 3hrs 30min to 4hrs 30min, and grades it 3. You walk past Clontarf Reserve, the Aboriginal rock engravings at Grotto Point, Arabanoo lookout over North Head and South Head, and Reef Beach. The track detours in places when the tide is high, and Sydney Harbour National Park is open sunrise to sunset, so leave yourself daylight.

3️⃣ Getting home
The F1 leaves Manly Wharf and reaches Circular Quay in 22 to 30 minutes, every 15 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. The last one is 11:50pm and the gates shut two minutes before, in at 12:12am. A Saturday of travel caps at $9.65 and the walk itself is free.

🚗 Drive it and your car spends the day at the Spit Bridge while you finish 10km away in Manly, so the bus and the ferry are the easier way round.

🚆 redfern station is an 8 minute walk, macdonaldtown is 10 and newtown is 15
🚌 buses stop on city road at sydney university, 5 minutes away

and the station is the part worth knowing about

redfern is the fifth busiest in the state, and for 140 years it had no accessible way in

the new southern concourse has six lifts to platforms 1 to 10

it doubles as a public walk between little eveleigh and marian streets

Three bus questions only school parents get right. NSW school holidays run Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October, and on some bus routes that means fewer trips, not more.

1️⃣ What does an S over a bus time mean?
Look at the Service Information row at the top of a bus timetable. An S over a column means that trip only runs on public school days. The letter is in the row above the times rather than beside them, which is what makes it easy to walk past. An H is the other way round, a trip that only runs in the school holidays.

2️⃣ Which 428 trip stops on Monday?
On the current 428 timetable, City Martin Place to Canterbury, one weekday trip leaves Enmore Park at 7:50am and reaches Canterbury Boys High School at 8:10am, 20 minutes later. It carries an S. From Monday 28 September it does not run, and on this route nothing takes its place.

3️⃣ What runs on Labour Day?
Monday 5 October is Labour Day. Buses run the Sunday and public holidays timetable that day, not the weekday one, so neither letter comes into it. The adult Opal cap is $9.65 instead of $19.30, and the child and concession cap is $4.80.

there is a right spot to stand on the platform when you have a pram

the guard's job is to see you get on before the doors shut, so you want the carriage they ride in, and you find it by the blue light on the side of the train

on a bus the pram faces the back with the brake on, the shopping comes off the handles, and if that space is already taken you fold it and wait for one with room

the metro has no step at all and two spaces for prams in every carriage, so if both are full the next one is about four minutes off in the peak

the pram costs nothing, kids three and under ride free, and from four to fifteen a child's fares cap at $9.65 Monday to Thursday and $4.80 Friday to Sunday

There is a tunnel out of Wynyard Station, and it is the easiest way into Barangaroo.

It is called the Wynyard Walk, and this is the whole of it.

1️⃣ From inside the station, follow the signs to Exit 4.
2️⃣ Go through the tunnel and come out at Napoleon Plaza.
3️⃣ Straight ahead over the Sussex Street Bridge.
4️⃣ An escalator and a lift take you down to the towers.

It is a four minute walk from the station and you do not cross a single main city street. At the other end there are more than 50 places to eat, drink and shop.

If you would rather ride in, the M1 metro stops at Barangaroo. It is 6 minutes from Central and 3 minutes from Martin Place. That trip costs $4.33 in peak and $3.03 off peak, and peak Monday to Thursday is 6:30am to 10am and again 3pm to 7pm.

Monday to Thursday the last metro out of Barangaroo is 12.36am, in both directions. Going north it reaches Tallawong at 1.22am, and going south it reaches Central at 12.42am and Sydenham at 12.48am.

🌿 There is a garden on old railway land above Lavender Bay, and nothing points you to it.

Wendy Whiteley started clearing the land in 1992, in the weeks after the painter Brett Whiteley died, and she kept going for thirty years. It is free, it is open every day, and there is deliberately no sign telling you where it is.

⛴️ F4 from Circular Quay, Wharf 5, to McMahons Point, 10 minutes, then a 5 to 10 minute walk up to the garden. The last ferry back to Circular Quay leaves McMahons Point at 11:27pm. (Transport for NSW)

⚠️ This weekend buses replace T1 trains between Hornsby and Milsons Point, so the ferry is the way in rather than the train. Sydney Ferries are also running a reduced timetable until 15 October, so allow extra time.

your bike goes free on nearly everything in sydney, and there is one mode that will not take it

trains, intercity, metro, ferries and light rail all carry a bike free

there is no peak hour ban either, they only recommend avoiding it

the manly ferry has bike storage, and circular quay to manly takes 22 to 30 minutes

though a crew can refuse a bike if there is no safe room

light rail takes it when there is room, and you get off the bike before the platform

on parramatta light rail there are racks for four bikes

but bikes are not permitted on any bus in NSW

that includes train replacement buses, and the southwest link buses between sydenham and bankstown

so if your line is closed for trackwork, you are riding home

and converted e-bikes have been banned on sydney trains, NSW trainlink and metro since 1 november 2025

that means a pedal bike with a battery and motor added, not a factory built one, and the fine is $400
