There is a whole gallery of Chinese art in Chippendale, and walking in is free.

1️⃣ It is called White Rabbit
White Rabbit sits at 30 Balfour Street in Chippendale, about ten minutes on foot from Central. There are four levels of exhibition space with stairs or a lift between them, everything hanging in it is Chinese art made this century, and there is no ticket to book. The show on at the moment is called Black Myth and it runs to 15 November.

2️⃣ It is shut on Monday and Tuesday
The doors open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. A free tour starts at the front desk at 11am and again at 3pm, and there is no booking for it, you turn up about five minutes early and tell the receptionist you want to come along.

3️⃣ There is a teahouse on the ground floor
Handmade dumplings run from 11am to 3.30pm and the tea keeps going until 5pm, so get there before half past three if the dumplings are the point.

4️⃣ Getting there
Central Station is a 10 minute walk and Redfern Station is the same distance from the other side. The Railway Square bus stands are ten minutes on foot as well. Your Opal taps cap at $19.30 on a Wednesday or Thursday, and at $9.65 on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

The main entrance on Balfour Street has wheelchair access, and there is a lift inside the building.

Which day are you going?

The new Sydney Fish Market is open at 1 Bridge Road, Glebe, on the water at Blackwattle Bay, daily 7am to 10pm.

The light rail stop called Fish Market is not the closest stop to it. It is 700m away, and it is being renamed Bank Street for exactly that reason.

Three stops are within walking distance, all on the L1 Dulwich Hill Line.

1️⃣ Wentworth Park, 400m, the closest.
2️⃣ Glebe, 450m, if you sail past it.
3️⃣ Bank Street, 700m, the one still signed Fish Market.

By bus, the 389 from Bondi Junction to Pyrmont and the 501 from Parramatta to Central Pitt Street both stop on Harris Street, about 550m away. The 370, 431, 433 and 469 stop on Glebe Point Road, about 750m.

Parking is capped at $90 for a day, with the first 20 minutes free. The light rail is an Opal fare and leaves you 400m from the door.

Things to do in September in Sydney, and how you actually get to each one without a car.

1️⃣ Festival of the Winds
Sunday 13 September, 11am to 4pm, Bondi Beach, free. Take the T4 to Bondi Junction, where extra services run from Central between 10am and 6pm, then the 381x express shuttle to the beach roughly every six minutes. Metro buses replace trains between Tallawong and Chatswood that day, so plan around it if you are coming from the northwest.

2️⃣ Tulip Time
From 11 September at Corbett Gardens in Bowral, 9:30am to 4:30pm. The only one here that charges: $18.50 online, $20 at the gate, under 12s free. Bowral has its own station on the Southern Highlands Line, a six minute walk from the gardens.

3️⃣ Australian Native Food Festival
Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September from 9am at Carriageworks. Entry is free but you register first. Eight minutes' walk from Redfern Station, or ten from Macdonaldtown.

🚗 And one we are deliberately leaving off. World Time Attack is at Eastern Creek on 4 and 5 September, and there is no station near it and no event shuttle listed, so it is a car day. Better to say that than to let you find out.

Which one are you doing?

The Sydney Marathon is on today and the city is shut to cars from 2am until 4.30pm. Transport for NSW says driving is not an option.

If you are running, your race bib is your ticket. Travel is included in what you paid to enter, so a runner's fare on the day comes to $0. Show the bib to transport staff as you board.

Which station depends on your start group. The green group gets off at Crows Nest. Purple and orange head to Victoria Cross or North Sydney. A metro comes every 4 minutes until 8am, then every 5 minutes until 3pm, and extra early morning services are running.

Buses and light rail are heavily impacted across the city and the southeast, so metro and train are the two to rely on. You may need to change modes to finish the trip.

One thing the entry does not cover is the airport station access fee, to and from the International and Domestic Airport stations. And check your last service home before you set off.

There is a national park you get to by ferry.

Royal National Park, and the Coast Track starts at Bundeena. T4 to Cronulla Station, then Cronulla Ferries across to Bundeena, about 30 minutes.

The ferry is not on Opal. It is $9.40 each way, $18.80 return, and they take Eftpos and cards on board, no booking. Because it sits outside Opal it will not show up in a trip planner either, so do not go looking for it there. Your Opal still covers the train. Park entry is $12 a vehicle, so arriving this way it costs you nothing.

From the wharf it is a 1.5km walk to the start of the track on Beachcomber Ave.

Then the part that matters. The last boat back leaves Bundeena at 6pm, and they run hourly from 9am. On a weekend there is no bus out of Bundeena at all, so the boat is the only way home. From 1 September a 7pm sailing returns, but this weekend 6pm is the last one.

The full Coast Track is 27km one way, Grade 4, two days end to end. Most people walk out and turn back, and the 6pm boat is what decides how far you go.

What is the best walk you have done without driving to it?

People say Palm Beach is half a day away if you do not have a car. Others say it is three buses.

It is two buses.

B1 from Wynyard Station, Carrington St Stand B. Change at Narrabeen for the 199, and the 199 finishes at Palm Beach Golf Club on Beach Rd. Governor Phillip Park is a 9 minute walk from there.

1hr 33min door to door. Leave Wynyard Station at 10.04am and you are on the sand at 11.37am, and it is about the same coming home.

$4.03 for the first leg off peak and the second bus is free, because the first leg has already reached the top fare band. $8.06 for the whole day. Travel after 10am and back before 3pm to stay off peak, or the fare goes to $5.77 a leg.

And there is no last bus. The 199 runs 24 hours. Every 10 minutes through the day, then hourly through the small hours. Catch the 3.37am and you are at Wynyard by 4.56am.

The Barrenjoey track goes up from Governor Phillip Park to the lighthouse, about 1km and 30 minutes each way, no entry fee. No car gets up there either.

What is the furthest you have got in Sydney without a car?

There is a study space on King St in Newtown that stays open until 2am. O3 Space, 32-38 King St.

Anyone can use it between 10am and 9pm, and the free tier is three hours a week during staffed hours. Members keep going after 9pm, until 2am. Membership is $19.99 a week paying weekly, $14.99 a week monthly, or $9.99 a week if you commit to six months.

The part nobody publishes is how you get home.

The nearest station is Macdonaldtown, an 11 minute walk, not Newtown. By bus it is King St opp Georgina St, 2 minutes from the door, and the 423, 426 and 428 stop there in the evening.

Leave at midnight and the last train out of Macdonaldtown is the T3 at 12.26am, Town Hall at 12.35am. The last regular bus is the 423 at 12.49am.

Stay to the 2am close and there is no train at all. Walk 10 minutes to University of Sydney on City Rd and the N10 night bus goes at 2.02am and reaches Town Hall at 2.12am. The N30 follows at 2.12am and the N40 at 2.19am.

These are the Wednesday services. Weekends run differently.

The car park at Tallawong is free, and the reason it is free is the bit nobody reads.

It is called Park and Ride, and it gives you up to 18 hours a day. Tallawong P1 is on Conferta Ave, right at the station, and on a weekday the metro line runs every 4 minutes in the peak and every 5 between the peaks.

The whole thing runs on one card. You tap on with an accepted Opal card, you tap off at the other end with that same card, then you tap that same card again at the car park exit gate, and you are out of the car park inside 18 hours. Nothing at the boom gate tells you that the tap is the thing paying for your parking.

Miss any of it on a weekday and the rate is $30 if you drove in before 5pm, and it is the same $30 if you simply stay past the 18 hours.

If you did tap and were charged anyway, do not just wear it. There is a refund claims form, and the parking system can take up to 48 hours to see your Opal travel, so give it two days before you lodge one.
