This Earth Day, we have been thinking about our oceans, our planet, and the role our industry plays in protecting both. 🌍
Zero-emission cruising is one of the biggest conversations in boating right now, with Europe leading the charge. Here in Australia, those discussions are just beginning.
As of 1 January 2026, all passenger ships below 10,000 GT entering Norway’s World Heritage fjords must operate on zero-emission technology, effectively capturing cruise ships and large ferries in the region. Amsterdam declared its city centre canals a zero-emission zone for pleasure craft from April 2025.
The superyacht sector is pushing hard on hybrid propulsion, hydrogen fuel cell technology, and fully electric drives. Each comes with its own challenges, but the upside is compelling. The benefit? Silent operation, zero noise or vibration, and a lighter footprint on the very waters owners love most.
Here in Australia, the moves are already happening too. Western Australia is bringing its first electric ferry fleet to Perth’s Swan River by 2027, backed by a national net-zero target by 2050 and a Maritime Emissions Reduction National Action Plan in development.
Pantaenius is proud to support the innovations and initiatives bringing the industry closer to a zero-emission future.
