Here’s something for those who love kitties and travel. I met this kitten in a small village called Malealea in the African country of Lesotho. She was absolutely adorable and very sweet. She was the last cat I saw before breaking my leg - I was passing through this village on a couple day hike and later that day I broke my leg climbing a treacherous section of mountain when rocks came loose.

Monument Valley is one place I’ll never get sick of.. just about every road trip down through the US I manage to sneak a detour to this corner of Utah/Arizona in. The sheer size of these monoliths is unbelievable. Boulders that have fallen and lay around the base of these towers are sometimes the size of houses to give perspective!

At Barefoot Manta Island in Fiji we stayed in tents just a few metres from the beach. We were hanging out there one evening having some beers with our new-found friends when nature decided to treat us to one of the most spectacular sunsets I’ve ever seen. It was like a volcano of sunlight overflowing and painting the sky around us. We were already on a high from snorkelling with manta rays that day - it was one of the best evenings of the year. To cap it off, adorable hermit crabs were all around us; we fell in love with them - they’re so sweet!

The coastal route from Canada down to Southern California is a must-do drive if you love road trips.

A throwback to one of my all time favourite photos of the MJ on a road trip in one of my favourite states. This is parked in front of the Silver Dollar Saloon in a little Colorado mountain town called Leadville. It’s one of those saloons where it feels like you’ve stepped back in time when you walk inside.

The best part about road trips and exploring new roads - finding something cool to stop and check out.

If you’re interested in abandoned things or urban exploring, this one’s for you. With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, many former bastions of the Communist regime were either remodelled to remove any Soviet associations, demolished, or simply abandoned. The topic of this post falls into the latter category. Perched atop the tallest hill the eye can see in any direction, this UFO-esque monument was originally constructed to celebrate the beginnings of Communism in Bulgaria. In its time it was the pinnacle of Soviet construction and art, with murals made up of 35 TONS of cobalt glass. The mountain itself had 9 metres of its peak blown off in order to create a more stable foundation for the building. The project was massive and very Soviet in character. Grandiose and awe-inspiring are hallmarks of their grand architectural aspirations.

To get in when I was there you had to clamber over some rubble and hoist yourself through a hole in the wall, as the front doors are locked shut and it is officially off limits. Once inside there are a labyrinth of passageways in various stages of disrepair you can explore; going into the basement was pretty terrifying - it was pitch black and I had no flashlight so I was using the flash of my camera to move, going off memory from each shot’s flash. When I came back up there was another guy taking photos; he hadn’t spotted me yet. I gave him the scare of his life when I surprised him out of nowhere, he turned out to be a good guy from Ireland who took it well!!

Like, comment and follow if you enjoy what you’re seeing. Thank you.

Next up is something from the Middle East. This building was the treasury or “Al-Khazneh” of the ancient city of Petra. It is the best preserved and probably most photographed building in the city. What you may not know is the city actually sprawls for kilometres from this site and was home to a staggering 30,000 people. Truly a wonder that such a city could be carved and built out of the mountain walls.

An interesting fact about Petra - the name comes from the Greek work “petros” meaning “rocks.”

We bought the 2 day pass to explore the city which at the time was 40 Jordanian Dinars for the first day and 1 Dinar for the second. On the second day we felt like adventuring - we accessed the city by walking through the desert and rock canyons on the far side that bypassed the pay booths (even though we had already paid 🤣). The hike involved swimming across a freezing cold rain-water filled section of canyon.. it gets cold in the desert at night and the canyons can be quite narrow, not letting any sunlight in! We’ll make another post about this adventure another time. For now, enjoy this camel!

Another note - hitchhiking from Amman to Petra the car I was in got into a multiple roll over accident that smashed the screen on my camera so all the photos I have from Petra were eye-balled.. that’s another story for another post maybe.. tell is below in the comments if you want to hear more travel stories! 👇
