What do you think it would take to get a 1,000-tonne, 14,053 cubic metre jack-up barge, afloat on the Mediterranean Sea, delivered to the Port of Dampier clean enough to clear Australia’s stringent Biosecurity border controls at first inspection, with no remedial cleaning required?

The repositioning of the JUB Shirine from Gibraltar to Dampier was the sixth collaboration between Freightplus and the vessel’s owners, the marine infrastructure and civil engineering firm, Maritime Constructions. Australia’s market leader in designing and delivering all manner of constructions on, in and around the water, Maritime Constructions first engaged Freightplus in 2008, to take care of the biosecurity compliance and shipping of a 650-tonne crane barge from southern Japan, into Adelaide.

They were the first vessel importer to recognise that, by committing the investment in pre-shipment, offshore biosecurity treatment not only protects Australia’s marine environment, it also means these very large and complex vessels are typically cleared and released on the day of arrival – no additional costs and no time lost. Both Maritime Constructions and Freightplus had personnel working on this JUB Shirine project, who had worked together on that first crane barge from Japan, 18 years ago, as did the carrier, Spliethoff BV.

Getting a 20-year-old, 1000-tonne JUB cleared on the day of arrival is no mean feat, but the collaborative effort of Maritime Constructions, Freightplus, Spliethoff and - essentially - Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, made it possible.
