We’re finishing Ask a Fashion Manufacturer with some of my favourite questions ✂️

✂️ What’s the quickest way to annoy a machinist?
✂️ What’s worse - a designer with no ideas or too many ideas?
✂️ Can you skip sampling?
✂️ And finally... is there such a thing as a stupid question?

That last one is something I say all the time in mentoring sessions.

If you don’t know something, ask. Fashion manufacturing has its own language, processes and rules, and nobody starts out knowing all of it.

There really is no such thing as a stupid question. 🤍

From Country to cloth to couture 💛💙🩷

This was our second time working with the Bunbury Noongar Arts Program, and our second time helping create looks for the Country to Couture runway — and what a beautiful project to be part of.

The Kambarang collection brought together seven Noongar artists, each translating their connection to Wardandi Country and the colours, light and textures of Kambarang into fabric through screen printing, block printing, eco-dyeing and hand painting.

Then those fabrics arrived at Textile Lab. ✂️

Our job was to help turn that artwork into something that could walk the runway — carefully working with each fabric and design to create the gowns and dresses you see here.

And that’s one of the things we love most about projects like this. You don’t need to come to us knowing exactly how your idea is going to become a garment.

Bring us the artwork. Bring us the fabric. Bring us the big idea.

We’ll work with you to figure out the rest.

If you’re an Indigenous artist, designer or arts centre thinking about applying for Country to Couture next year, we’d love to help you explore what you could create.

A very special project organised by the amazing Candice Nannup Candice Nannup 💛💙🩷

Part 3 of Ask a Fashion Manufacturer ✂️

This week:

✂️ What doesn’t fashion school prepare you for?
✂️ Is offshore manufacturing always cheaper?
✂️ What’s the best piece of industry advice I’ve been given?
✂️ What should you always do before cutting your fabric?

A little fashion industry knowledge gathered from more than 20 years of making clothes.

Save this one - especially if you’re just starting out.

Kambarang 💛💙🩷 From artwork to runway.

Seven Noongar artists. Seven unique expressions of Country. One very special collection.

Noongar Arts Fashion is an artist-led collective operating from Wilger Mia – Bunbury Regional Art Gallery on Wardandi Country.

For the Kambarang collection, artists spent time on Country absorbing the colours, light and textures of the Noongar season of transformation and birth — golden wattle, vibrant kangaroo paws, delicate orchids and everlastings sweeping across the landscape.

Those experiences became original artworks, translated directly onto fabric through screen printing, block printing, eco-dyeing and hand painting.

This was our second time working with the Bunbury Noongar Arts Program and our second time creating looks destined for the Country to Couture runway.

Projects like this are some of our favourites because they don’t have to begin with a conventional fashion design.

They can begin with an artwork. A piece of hand-painted fabric. An idea. A story. Or simply, “Could we turn this into a dress?”

From there, we can work together on the technical side — developing the garment, patterns and samples, working out how best to use the artwork placement, and cutting and constructing the final pieces.

So if you’re an Indigenous artist, designer or arts centre looking towards Country to Couture next year, don’t be put off because garment development isn’t what you normally do.

Bring us what you can imagine, and we’ll help you work out how to make it. ✂️

Part 2 of Ask a Fashion Manufacturer ✂️

This week we’re getting into some of the technical bits of turning an idea into a garment:

✂️ What’s in a tech pack?
✂️ What is grading?
✂️ What’s the golden rule for fitting a garment?
✂️ What does MOQ mean?

If you’re starting a fashion label, these are terms you’re going to hear a lot - and understanding them makes the whole manufacturing process a lot less daunting.

Save this one for later, and let me know what fashion manufacturing question you’d like answered next.

Starting a fashion label? Before you choose your logo, launch 20 styles or order fabric, there are a few things you need to know.

In Part 1 of Ask a Fashion Manufacturer, we’re answering the questions aspiring designers ask most:

✂️ What should I do first?
✂️ Do I need to know how to sew?
✂️ How much money do I need?

Plus a few quickfire fashion questions along the way.

Save this if you’re thinking about starting a label, and send it to someone who needs to hear it.

What’s the biggest question you have about starting a fashion brand?

There’s something very satisfying about watching the laser do its thing ✂️

This is a little glimpse behind the scenes at Textile Lab, laser cutting one of our regular production jobs.

The digital pattern goes in, the fabric goes down and every piece is cut with precision, ready to head over to the sewing room.

It’s one of those parts of fashion production you don’t often get to see, but it’s a big part of what happens here every week.

Precision cuts. Less waste. And a very satisfying reel. 👌
