Maleny Snake Catcher - Peter Morningstar

Yesterday evening I received a call for an injured snake on the side of the road at the corner of Palm and Tamarind Streets Maleny. It turned out to be a 1.8m Eastern Brown snake, that was unfortunately dead. There are some Eastern Browns around Maleny, but not many compared to other areas. If seen, it is best to leave them alone and try not to run over them. An injured snake is more dangerous than a live one.

Last night I went to lock up the chickens and collect the eggs. This Brown Tree Snake was trying to swallow an egg. I took some photos and left it to it. I thought it was being a bit ambitious but if it got the egg down it was welcome to it. After about 30 minutes of trying it gave up and left. You can see how wide they can open their mouth to get down a potential food item.

We saw a nice 1.8m eastern brown snake this arvo. It looked like it was following a scent trail, probably a female's, across the dirt road in Conondale. I took a few photos, admired it and let it go on it's way. It was a well fed snake. At this time of year, and for the next couple of months, the males are out looking for mates and they are the ones that tend to be more active.

There have been a few Eastern Brown Snakes around Maleny recently. So take care out there.

Even though it is spring and the breeding season and there are snakes about, the colder weather seems to be slowing them down a bit. As it warms up expect to see more snakes around. Best choice is to leave them alone, however if you cannot do that call a snake catcher to remove them.

Merry Christmas to all.
I saw this about cats in the wild and as all animals, including snakes and other reptiles, are impacted by not only feral but pet cats being loose I thought I would share it around. Please keep cats indoors or in a cat run to protect our native animals.

This is a hefty eastern brown released from bird netting today. It is only about 1.6 meters but it s really solid. If you have bird netting at home please remove it.

There are still a few snakes about even though it is cooling down. Like this red bellied black snake relocated from Maleny.
