Was time to dust off an old project this week - have a 1997 that's been sitting for 4yrs whilst I worked on other things. After experiencing the in its registered L1E form, I'm now curious about starting with an ADR compliant frame and wheel set, fitting it out with an retrofit from the team at ELMOFO .
Will be documenting the build process and rationale, but in brief:
- KDX200 is a great all-rounder frame for many trail riders, rates as my 2nd favourite bike of all time (No1 was a 200EC);
- rebuild costs would be involved for the engine/clutch, with a new top-end, kickstarter issues, general ICE elements wear/tear from age and vibration, wiring harness rebuild;
- steel perimeter frame has a massive void well suited to battery and a potential custom compartment to replace the fuel tank
- ADR compliant already, means no woes with brake upgrades, wheel set changes to 18/21, Japanese build quality, with an engineer approval pathway;
- is not ADR compliant, so can't be registered for road use. Last update was for 2H2024 for this to be available in Oz;
- our circular economy focus means valuing items already built, extending their life, which is where has a role to play, breathing new life into old favourites.
