My name is Jodie and I have been a qualified child restraint installer and adviser since February 2011. I trained with the Australian Child Restraint Resource Initiative and update my registration each year. I originally became interested in child car safety during my time as a babysitter

. I had purchased a 20 year old op shop seat, and a 10 year old eBay seat to transport other people's precious babies. I began researching car seats as the age of the children changed and I needed different seats, and was horrified to read of all the things I had been doing wrong. I decided to take a course (the ACRI course) to improve my knowledge an also help parents ensure their children are safe in their own cars. So many people are unaware that what they are doing things that could put their babies at risk.

70% of child restraints are installed or used incorrectly. This can be something as easy to miss as a twisted strap, or a severe error such as not attaching the essential tether strap. I provide FREE checks, and will only charge an installation fee if adjustments need to be made. I keep my prices low so its an affordable service to everyone. I am a registered business and have an ABN. CHILD RESTRAINT LAWS - bear in mind these are an absolute minimum, it's best to leave your child in their restraint until they physically outgrow it.

~ A child under six months of age to travel in a rearward facing approved child restraint (the RECOMMENDATION is to leave rear-facing until at least 12 months).
~ A child aged six months to under 4 years to travel in either a rearward facing OR forward facing approved child restraint. The type of restraint will depend on the child’s size (the RECOMMENDATION is to keep a child harnessed until they physically don't fit. There are restraints available that can harness an average 6yo).
~ A child aged 4 years to under 7 years to travel in either a forward facing approved child restraint with an inbuilt harness, or an approved booster seat. The type of restraint will depend on the child’s size (the RECOMMENDATION is to keep a child in their booster until they pass the 5-step-test. This is usually when they are 140cms tall).
~ A child aged 7 years to under 16 years to travel in either an approved booster seat or an adult seatbelt. The type of restraint will depend on the child’s size.
~ A person 16 years and over to travel in an adult seatbelt.

πŸ›¬ CARES HARNESS πŸ›«

I usually take car seats on planes, but flying as the only adult with 2 kids made it impossible.

So, I got a CARES harness! This harness turns the plane seat into a car-seat style harness (like the "H-Harnesses of the 90s/00s).

While it increases safety in turbulence, the main reason I got it was for comfort when sleeping during our night time flight. The familiarity of the harness feeling means kids can just recline back and sleep upright, with their torso supported from slumping.

It is suitable for children 10-20kgs (approx 1-5yo and, must be able to sit unaided).

I hire out CARES for $10/week. Get in touch if you're travelling and want to use it πŸ™‚

πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈ Expecting twins? πŸ‘―

Want the convenience of a capsule for the first few months?

We have InfaSecure Adapt Capsules available for hire:
3️⃣ 3 months = $99 (second base +$35)
6️⃣ 6 months = $139 (second base + $55)

πŸͺ’ These capsules are the easiest in Australia to use as the tether is connected to the base, not the capsule - no mucking around untwisting and hooking a tether every time you get in and out of the car!

🚦 Just click to base and go

FEATURES (From InfaSecure website):
πŸ”… Premium Active Bambooβ„’ antimicrobial fabric keeps your baby cool, fresh, and protected by limiting mould, odour, and bacteria. Versatile installation options, including ISOFix or seat belt with the Easy Lock Belt Clamp, make setup quick and secure.
πŸ”… Patented Tether Base Design: Australia’s first tether base keeps the top tether securely fitted in the vehicle, allowing the capsule to click in and out without daily tether adjustments
πŸ”… Compact and Lightweight: Just 59 cm long and 4.6 kg (capsule only)
πŸ”… Pop-Out Reclining Foot: Helps achieve the optimal recline level for safer, more comfortable positioning
πŸ”… All-day Comfort: Active Bambooβ„’ fabric with antimicrobial properties, cool, moisture-wicking, and bacteria-resistant

πŸš— TESLA MODEL YL vs CAR SEATS πŸš—

I have decided I won't be installing car seats into the second row of Tesla YLs as a blanket rule.

The YL has a seat configuration of 2-2-2, with anchor points and isofix on all 4 rear seats.

The shape of the 2nd row seats makes it impossible (in my opinion) to get a safe install with the tether so that it won't shift.

Official manufacturers stances are:

πŸ”΄ INFASECURE
- All restraints incompatible

🟠 DOREL (Maxi Cosi, Mother's Choice + Safety First)
- Potentially compatible at a qualified installer's discretion

🟠 BRITAX (inc Safe N Sound + Babylove)
- Very impractical, the best it can be done is "not ideal"

🟠 NUNA (inc Bugaboo)
- Can go over headrest for single tether (which I am absolutely not comfortable with)

⚫️ JOIE (inc Bright)
- Awaiting response

I can absolutely install any seat in the 3rd row as the seats are a normal shape. But 2nd row is a blanket "no" from me!

Safe N Sound Baby Safety Capsule

"THE VELCRO CAPSULE"

This is the crash test video that was shown on TV ads around the country to encourage people to use a capsule, rather than a bassinet secured by an adult belt.

This Australian innovation had a release mechanism that ensured the capsule part rotated in a crash, keeping the baby's spine more vertical and distributing forces uniformly over its body.

At the same time, the capsule pushed against an impact-absorbing bubble in the base.

Once the capsule was on the market, public hospitals brought in a rule that parents could not take a baby home by car without one. Hospitals and councils ran hire services to encourage the use of capsules.

In 1991 the Australian Standards became stricter and the velcro was replaced with a 5 point seatbelt harness. The velcro models were phased out from 1993 to 1996.

During it's time the Baby Safety Capsule protected over 2 million little Australians.

βš“οΈ ANCHOR POINTS VS CARGO POINTS πŸ›οΈ

In Australia, anchor points have to pass strict load testing for the vehicle to pass certification (ADR34).

The load on the tether strap must pass at 3.4kN
Converted to kilograms of force, this is approximately 346kg βš–

Cargo points cannot withstand this force. Some are labelled with the weight they're designed to hold, others aren't.

Always make sure you're using an anchor point to tether your seat. If it doesn't have the picture of the car seat and anchor next to it, check the vehicle manual. It's vital you're using an anchor point to ensure your child will be safe in the event of a crash (or hard braking).

If you're not sure where your anchor points, contact me for advice!

If your child's early education centre isn't providing a minibus with car seats for excursions, find a new one 😝

Got my hands on a Safe N Sound Baby Safety Capsule!

The exact same as what my brothers and I were in in the early 90s.

In the next few days I'll post footage of the crash testing - even with velcro instead of a harness it passed really well.

This shell was manufactured all the way to 2015, with minor updates along the way to meet new standards. It was discontinued due to lack of sales as parents were choosing "travel system" capsules over this one.
