Southern emu-wren project

Southern emu-wren project This project aims to understand the habitat attributes that influence the Mount Lofty Ranges southern emu-wren in the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Our iconic Mount Lofty Ranges Southern Emu-wren (Stipiturus malachurus intermedius) is critically endangered with only ~140-290 left in the world. This Masters research project aims to understand the relative influence of habitat attributes on distribution, and to help focus future conservation actions. This is a great opportunity to see rare and beautiful wetlands and assist in conserving the endangered Mount Lofty Ranges Southern Emu Wren, which is endemic to this area.

This last Sunday there was a revegetation day organized by Nature Foundation at Watchalunga Nature Reserve. We planted several lignum, and sedges. Back in 2017, in my thesis project, we recognized these as significant vegetation for the Southern emu-wren swamp habitat. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I had. I am also happy to tell you that previous revegetation campaigns have produced good lignum patches where more wrens have been spotted recently. Thanks to everyone that was involved in the project and thanks to Nature Foundation. It's amazing to see the recovery of swamps and wrens!
