Sydney is losing people — and the numbers are bigger than most people realise.
154,589 Australians left Sydney for the rest of the country over the past four years. That's more than the entire population of Geelong, choosing somewhere else.
So where are they going? And why?
We dug into four years of ABS data plus our own platform data from tens of thousands of real moves — and the answers might surprise you.
The biggest destination isn't the Gold Coast or Brisbane. It's actually right next door — regional NSW. The Central Coast, Wollongong, and Newcastle are absorbing the overflow.
And when Sydneysiders do leave? Nearly 4 in 10 are swapping an apartment for a house. The city isn't pushing people out because they want to go. It's pushing them out because they can't afford to stay in the home they actually want.
