Day 191 🌨🌞 - The heavy rain overnight was wonderful to hear on the roof of the van. Apart from a couple of short-lived showers at night in Darwin, this was the first real bit of rain we have had on this trip. Woke to a sunny day though.☔️🌞

This morning's walk around around the top of Wangi Falls wasnt long but it was practically straight up, and straight down. 🚶‍♀️🚶Lots and lots of steps of sorts.
Considering the heat and humidity we were both a ball of sweat by the time we reached the bottom. Thankfully the plunge pool and waterfall were refreshing and welcoming. 🏞

More swim time in the camp pool today watching the clouds build. Quite a spectacular time of year.
It will be sad to leave here tomorrow. Six days in Litchfield NP, covered all open falls, plunge pools, cascades, not yet waterlogged though. 🏊‍♀️

Don got busy baking yesterday. Mmmm chocolate mud cake.

Day 190 🌞 - Another day, another couple of waterfalls.

We spent the morning swimming at the popular Wangi Falls. Surprisingly not too busy until we were ready to leave. Sitting under the main fall meant hanging on so not to get washed away. Brilliant! Another wonderful Litchfield destination.

Next spot was Lower Cascades. The first section of the walk offered a false sense of ease. The last 300m including the final 20 to the fall and pool was some of the most difficult we have attempted in all our trekking. Slippery boulders and jagged rocks. Yes, it looked nice but considering the spectacular places we have swum in over the past few days, not something we would recommend. Much easier and more spectacular places to enjoy the water.

Chilling out in the arvo, (the lad needs his beauty sleep), reading, catching up on business, and simply appreciating the bush surroundings. Missed our daily pool swim. Time flies when you are doing nothing. 🤔😀

Day 189 🌞 - A day of off road driving, historical buildings, shady walk, another spectacular waterfall and swimming plunge pool.

The drive to Tjaynera Falls and Blyth Homestead was a bit bumpy with a rocky creek crossing. All part of the adventure.

The homestead has had a little touch up.tje best example of housing of its era still standing. Imagine building this nearly 100 years ago and living there until the 1960's?

The walk along the pretty 2klm Sandy Creek meant stepping over and through projecting rocks. Certainly worth the hike and both ready for a swim at the falls. My vote for the most spectacular escarpment and falls. Looking up at the sky from the base of the falls was breathtaking.

The croc trap at the head of the creek was a bit daunting but we are used to seeing them now and swimming anyway. 🤔🦎

Certainly pumped up the cool air in the car after our return hike in 36 degree temp.

Day 188 🌞 - On our way to the Litchfield Safari Camp we detoured for what we thought we be a quick stop at Zebra Stone Litchfield. Nope! Kim and June had just returned from mining and were keen to share their knowledge and examples of the stunning Zebra Stone. Stipes, bubbles, waves, every piece was different. Don bought some chips to include in his wood turning and I secured a necklace. My colours. 😀🫏

Very impressed with this campground. Plenty of grass, trees, space, and a very nice pool. Looks like they have big plans here for entertaining in the future.

Travelling over the past 6 months we have met many terrific people along the way. Particularly when you keep overlapping your travels, you spend time and become friends. Kay N Terry Baartz in Qld and WA who are now travelling with Brissie friends in southern WA, Kim & Jennie Cox in Qld & WA who are also now in the south, Pete and Rosemarie Harris in Qld who we hope to catch up with and go fishing in Caldwell next month, Teesh Talbot, Annabell & Chuck Qld, more fishing in Mackay, and Kris & Julianna Harvey in NT. And randomly connecting with past work mates Sally Stick & Gary who are also in WA south.

Plus of course the friends from home who have joined us along the way. Pamela Taylor, Neville Taylor, Ollie Switzer, Brett Switzer, Debbie Cali and Michael, Madonna Ashman & Shane. Miss you guys.

We have learned even though we have been travelling by ourselves much of that time, we are never travelling alone.

Day 187 🌞 - A fabulous day of relaxing under waterfalls and swimming 🏊‍♀️ in wonderfully clear pools.

First stop was at the magnetic termite mounds that have a north-south orientation and up to 2m in height. Like a futuristic city of uniformed buildings.

Timing it perfectly to arrive at Florence Falls before the families and tourist buses rolled in we practically had the pool to ourselves. With the falls flowing fast it was a workout to get to sit under and enjoy nature's massage

Next stop was Buleys Rockhole with cascading falls and crystal swimming holes. Clear memories of these spots from our visit 30 years ago and just as wonderful as we remember.

An afternoon noon game of cards with Kris and Jules who are heading south on their return trip to Melbourne tomorrow while we have another four days to enjoy all Litchfield NP.

Day 186 🌞 - Leaving our van early at the auto electrician, we headed south for a swim at Berry Springs to fill the time.

First people at the pools we could enjoy this peaceful quiet to ourselves for 30 minutes before the hordes arrived. The water temperature was so perfect even Don swam under the falls, in the main pool and lower pool. A record 👏

Still time to kill the Darwin Musuem beckoned. Impressed with the exhibits we saw before called back to collect the van. The real life Cyclone Tracy stories were heartfelt and frightening.

Driving to Litchfield we were shocked at all the ugly, useless solar panels along the road instead of farm land. 😭

Coincidently caught up with Kris & Jules from Melbourne again at tonight's park. A rousing game of Play Nine before heading to The Banyon for dinner. Didnt get kicked out but last to leave. A fun night with great conversation. 🥂🍻🍽

Day 185 🌞☁️ - Another full day exploring Darwin. Surrounded by ocean there are many spectacular views points. First up was Nightcliff foreshore and then to Lee Point. Hot and humid walking anywhere so not taking on big walks and thankful for any shade.

Restocked groceries. Boy, this should last us a month.

After Don's daily grandpa nap, we headed back to the Darwin Waterfront to the combined RFDS Tourist Facility.

This was a totally immersive 3D VR experience where you are right there at the bombing if Darwin on February 19, 1942. From the wharf, from the water, and from the air. Then move onto the hologram movies sharing more history and stories.

The VR experience is repeated sitting beside a pilot and nurse assisting a patient on a flight. The hologram with Reverend John Flynn sharing the RFDS story was wonderfully inspiring.

This was certainly a highlight visit. Technology creating a fabulous experience.

Day 184 🌞☁️ - There is a lot of interesting, traumatic, and war time history in this city.
A very quick in and out to see if were missing anything at the casino.
Nope.. on to Fannie Bay Gaol.

Rather than just strolling the site and reading the history connected to the gaol, we downloaded the app and enjoyed an oral tour. With a history of nearly 100 years there were plenty of stories.
Imagine living in these wire cages in the Darwin heat dealing with mosquitoes along with everything else prisons of the era dealt out. The walls spoke through the audio tour. After Darwin was bombed they did release the prisoners doing time for lesser crimes as part of the prison was damaged and nowhere to house them.

More war history at Darwin Military Musuem. Again here, audio and video told the story of not only the town, but individuals sharing their experiences making it even more real.

A Holocaust Musuem is attached to this site. Challenging sad history. 😔

Both of these locations are a must when visiting Darwin. If we don't remember our history, we are likely to repeat it.

Day 183 🌞🌨🦁 - We started the day exploring the Darwin Waterfront Precinct. Yes, there is a spot you can safely swim 🏊‍♀️ in the ocean in Darwin.

We thought it unusual to spot a helicopter in the street, but hey, the military are based here.🚁

Slipping back in time the next stop was the fuel storage tunnels. So much history that is easily forgotten. 253 air raids by the Japanese on Darwin. 253! The men and women who held, fought, and built the city were made of a stronger stuff than us later generations can imagine. Wonderful to see children and teenagers interested in their history.

It was suggested we try the Trailer Boat Club, Bundilla Beach for lunch. Sea breeze & view 10/10, presentation of meal 9/10, meal, sadly 5/10.

Now for the highlight of the day...yep...the AFL grand final. Hotel walking distance from our campsite, tick. Comfy seats and big screen, tick. Other Lions supporters, tick. Free snacks at half time, tick. A truly brilliant game, tick. Lions winning. ✅️✅️✅️. 🦁🦁🦁
